Whi*tby's host swim team cornes second'in meet The Whitby Iroquois Swimn Team hosted a, "tri - swim meet"l Sunday January 30 with the Scarborough Dol. phins and the Port Hope Aquatic Club. The large Scarborough contingeut outnumbered the home team about 2 to 1. Whitby's second place finish with 268 points to Scarborough's 376 poinits is impressive in light of the relative numbers. Port Hope placed third with I157 points. The following swimmers competed for Whitby: Lara Batherson, Peter Pfeiffer, Jennifer Jones, Lisa Pitters, Pam Haiseil, Susie Sillius, Jili Batherson, Peter Obden, Mary Winfield, Debbie Crouse, Roy Hoogstein, Mike Pfeiffer, Steve Noble, Tim Noble, Kathleen Kemp, Susan Bissel], Lorraine Osborne, Belinda Sillijus, Lori Batherson, Elizabeth Sillîjus, Lynne Fagan, Aileen Lewis, SaTldy Palfrey, Jimn Palfrey, Kevîn Bisseil. q-Freestyle, Backstroke, Butterfly, Breaststro'e and Individual Medlay events for 8 yrs and under, 10 yrs and under, 12 yrs and under, 14 yrs and under> and seniors were held before the freestyle team relays. The Whitby swimmners swam with a noticeable improvement in stamina and technique on the varlous flip-turns. The swimmers are now preparing for upcoming competition at the monthly sprint meets held at the new Etobicoke Olympium. One tie, one win for CBCs The Brooklin-Whitby CBC Juvenile team recently tied Oshawa in an exhibition game but defeated Bay Ridges in the second game of the round robin play-offs. On ian. 24, Wliitby tied the Oshawa Legion Major Juveniles 5-5, with Whitby goals by Carry Bruce, Joel Gangemi, John Jordan, Dan Kemp, and Wade Roberts. The game was played at the Iroquois Park Arena. At the Don Beer Arena Jan 27, Whitby. outscored Day Ridges, 5-3, with goals by Lloyd Connor (2), Garry Bruce, Blair Gibson, Dan Kemp and Brian Ward. In other hockey action, in the Novice League at Uxbridge, the Whitby OPSEU Warriors trounced Uxbridge 9-1. Greg Roberts had four goals and four assists and Jeff Page, two goals and> two assists. Billy O'Meara, Scott Helmer, and Jim Blyth had a goal and an assist each. Dave Westcott, and one 'each by Carry Roberts, Joey Nieu- wendyk and John Philips. Cobourg did not score until the last- haif of the third period. Beavers lose tourn ament The Bibeau Construction Beavers got off to a good start at the Pee Wee No. 2 Woolwich Tournament at. Elmira Jan. 22, wînning their flrst game, but they lost out in the second. In the first game, the Beavers defeated Kitchener, 3-1, with two goals by Russel Lewis and one by Kelvin Mask. There was strong ,goaltending for Whitby by Glen Campbell. However, in the second game, Whitby lost out to Collingwood 4-2. Whitby goals were scored by Wayne Misselbrook and Ken Lynde. The next tournament for the Beavers is Feb. 18 to 20 in H-aliburton. Plant diseases diseussed The first CÇ.eneral Meeting for 1977 of the Brooklin Horticultural Society, was held i the United Church Christian Education Building, Brooklin, at 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 26. President Margaret Davis introduced the speaker of the evening, Dr. Peter Rice of the Royal Botaniîcal Gardens in Hamilton. Dr. Rice was born and educated in Toronto and graduated from the University of Toronto. He also received training in Botany and Plant Pathology and was a member of the staff of that University until 1968.
