Residents of Whitby are asked to leave boxes of returnable bottles only outside their homes on Saturday, and they will be picked up by the Scouts. This drive is held once a year and is the major fund- raising project of the First Whitby Scouts. SWEETHEART DANCE The Whitby District Scouts are holding a Sweetheart Dance Saturdayat theMasonic Hall on Cochrane Street from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m., featuring door prizes, spot dances and a luncheon. Tickets are avail- able at the door or by calling 668-4925 or 669-9915. SEWING CLASSES Girls and young women Feb. 7-12 aged 12 to 26 who want to learn to make their own sportswear, are invited to take part in a "For Knits Only" course set up by the 4-H Club. Classes will be held every Monday starting Feb. 7 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. for eight weeks, in the home economics room at Anderson Collegiate, under the instruction of Mrs. Harold Grylls and Mrs. Gerald Cole. The classes are free. Both instructors recently attended a training school for leaders convened by a home economist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. Anyone wishing to partici- pate may call Mrs. Grylls at 668-5298 or Mrs. Cole at 728-6309, and register as soon as possible as there is a limit- ed membership in order to give individual guidance. To A POSITIVE OUTLOOK attend, one must be 12 years old as of March 1, 1977 or older. MUSIC FILMS "The Sound of Music" is the theme of the Whitby Public Library's Tuesday film nights in February. Country Jazz, the Beatles, Louis Armstrong, and Stompin' Tom Connors will be the featured attractions on Feb. 8. Bluegrass Music and the Guitar from Stoneage to Solid Rock will be on Feb. 15, and symphonic music and the harmonica will be featured on Feb. 22. Doreen Foster has exhibi- ted her works in several Canadian galleries, Canadian cultural centres in Paris and Brussels and Canada House in London, England. She is represented in many public and private collections in in Canada and abroad. She has also illustrated books and painted a series of water- colours for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. The exhibition has been arranged through the exten- sion services of the Art Gallery of Ontario, and continues until March 6. ETCHING TECHNIQUES Doreen Foster, the current exhibitor at the Whitby Arts Station, will conduct a work- shop in etching techniques Feb. 26 and 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Anyone wish- ing to register should call the Gallery at 668-4185 as soon as possible, as the registration is limited. ART SLI DES, A series of of the Western AND FILMS slides on arts World will be shown at the Whitby Arts Station Gallery throughout February on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The Gothic period will be featured on Feb. 5 and 6, Italian Renaissance and Mannerism on Feb. 12 and 1 3, Renaissance and Mannerisni outside Italy Feb. 19 and 20, and Baroque in the 17th century, Feb. 26 and 27. On Sunday Feb. 13 there will be a series of art films, starting at 3 p.m. POST-LUNAR CHINESE FESTIVAL On Feb. 25 from 8 p.m. to midnight Whitby Arts Inc. will be celebrating the "Year of the Serpant", with a post- lunar Chinese festival at the Station at Victoria and Henry Streets. The tickets, at $10 per person, will include entertain- ment, culinary ýdelights, Fire Dragon Punch, favors and a door prize of an oriental brush painting donated by Japanese artist Sue Tabuchi. ART AT TOWN HALL Two art exhibitions have been scheduled at the new Whitby Municipal Building. The first exhibition, of works by Whitby artists continues until Feb. 11. The second exhibition, photographs of animals at the Metro Zoo, by Jori Pezell and Neil Newton, will be on display from Feb. 17 to March 31. NATURE HIKE The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority will be conducting a hike in the Lynde Shores Conservation Area Sunday for those inter- ested in identifying winter birds and animal tracks.
