The Henry High tearu won the finals by one point, 31-30 over Dunbarton High School, at the Genosha Hotel in Oshawa last Wednesday. Members of the winning teai'n are John Forbes of Grade 10, his brother Murray Forbes of Grade 12, Robynn Ibbitson of Grade il, and Blair Cleveland of Grade 9. The team will proceed to Barrie on Feb. 14 to compete against the Simcoe County - team. Last year Henry Hfigh won the Durham Regional finals and placed seventh in Ontario, says the team's coach, Brian Graham, a machine shop A special volunteer co- ordinators' workshop on orientation and training of volunteers will be held at Durham College on Feb. 24 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The workshop is the first set up by the Volunteer Co-Ordinators of Durham Region,- an organization representing a number of social service agencies in the region. Members of the organiza- tion are the Whtby Psychia- tric Hospital, Durham Centre fo r the Developmentally Handicapped, Pineridge Train- ing Sehool of Bowmanville, Hope Centre of Oshawa, Family andçChildren's Services Distress Centre, Probation and Aftercare, John Howard Society, Birthuight, Big Sisters, and the .Volunteer Action Centre of Oshawa. The Volunteer Action Centre of Oshawa worked on behalf of the volunteer teacher. This year 42,000 students from 147 schools are competing across the province, he says. Each member of the Henry High tearn which defeated Dunbartori last week received a cash prize of $15, an IAPA crest and a regionai champion- ship crest. The TAPA safety awareness program is operating in many secondary schools in Ontario. says Mr. Graham. In Septem- ber and October, 300 Henry students tried out for the team, which was selected on Oct. 24, to compete against Dunbarton High School, Anderson Collegiate and Eastdale Collegiate in Oshawa. The contest last Wednesday consisted of 48 questions posed to the panel of students in a "Reach for the Top" format. Each student had four questions directed at co-ordinators' group to obtain financial assistance from the Secretary of State to set up the Feb. 24 workshop. Two trainers from the East York YWCA wil conduct the workshop, which is designed to stimulate participants into crea ting the ir own "machinery " out of the avaitable resources to apply to their own situation. The Volunteer Co-ordina- tors' group intends to plan more workshnps in the future and organize presentations to large companies on volunteer- ing ini the community. Corporate donors and spon- sors of volunteer organiza- tions retirees and pre-retirces are being considered also as target groups for this presen- tation. Mr. Graham points out that the students who won the contest are among the top students in the school and are a good choice for employment in the summer. Mr. Graham will be taking the Henry High teamn to Ryerson Polytechnical Insti- tute Feb. 22 for a contest which will be filmed by the IAPA for promotion purposes.
