Delegates from Cancer Society units and districts across Ontario attended a two-day campaign conference at Toronto's Royal York Hotel, January 22 and 23, to organize for the April fund- raising drive. Attending the conference from this area was Mr. and Mrs. John Visser of the Whitby Branch. As campaign chairman Mr. Visser said: "I am certain that with the knowledge and inspiration gained from this conference and -with the strong record of cooperation that we have experienced in our com- munity of Whitby in the past, we will be able to reach our 1977 objective of $21,000.00. "Eliminating cancer is a community responsibility and every citizen can share in that goal by supporting cancer research". Speaking to the volunteers at the meeting, Division Campaign Chairman, Ron Calhoun, of Thamesford, reported that the 1977 objective represents an increase of 8% over the actual amount raised last year. He was confident that the objective would be achieved by the "enthusiastic and dedicated". campaign team volunteers. The weekend sessions, having as a theme "You Are Still Making the Difference", highlighted the Cancer Society's work in education, publicity and service to patients through film, video tape, slide presentations and panel discussions. The primary guest speaker at this year's confer- ence was Dr. P. Burkitt, Honorary Senior Research Fellow at St. Thomas' Hospital Medical School in London, England. Dr. Peter Scholefield, Assistant Execu- tive Director of the National Cancer Institite, spoke on Canadian cancer research. Also in attendance from Australia, were Sir Charles Wanstall, Chairman; Mr. D.J. Lambert, Deputy Chairman and Mr. W.L. Rudder, Executive Director of the Queensland Cancer Fund. Boy Scouts plan tree planting On Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. the Whitby District Boy Scouts will hold a'kick-off night for their Trees For Canada project for 1977. The Trees For Canada project is a joint effort com- bining the Boy Scouts of Canada, the Whitby District Boy Scouts and the Town of Whitby Recreation Depart- ment. The scouts will be seeking pledges this spring to plant 1 5,000 evergreen trees in Whitby. About 626 boys of Whitby District Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers will be participating. Ten thousand trees will be planted at Camp X; 2,500 at Lynde .Creek, and 2,500 on the Scout nature trail along Pringle Creek fronm Dundas Street to Burns Street. Plan ting day is May 7.
