WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9,1977, PAGE 13 Will play school and club teams Anderson Collegite ruby teams visit Ire land in March By BRIAN WNTER Staff Writer Frorn March 14 to 24, Anderson Collegiate will do sornething no other Canadian public high school lias done. The school is sending its 37-man rugby team to Ireland to play _scliool and club teams of that country. The Irish Rugby Union lias a list of teamns that want to play the Anderson team, and after watching Anderson in its first games,.the Whitby.team will match against teams of .a sîiilar calibre. The Irish rugby tour is the brainchild of> Anderson 's physical education teacher Ron Pitcher, who coaches the school team, and coached a rugby tearu at Central Collegiate in Oshawa from 1971 to 1975. Last year when Mr. Pither was in Ottawa, a travel consul- tant suggested that when he returned to teaching in the fal he arrange to send a school rugby teain to Ireland. The travel consultant was John Mulins, a native of Galway City on the west coast of Ireland, a former executive director of the Ontario Rugby Union, and presently a board member of the ORU. Since he filrst proposed the idea at the beginning of Decembýer, Mr. Pither lias got the entire staff and adminis- tration of Anderson Collegiate behind hlm tb organize the trip and raise the $20,000) required to pay for it. Vice-Principal Ray Litt will accornpany the team to Ireland, along with Mr. Pither, and Glen Elliot an Oshawa lawyer wlio is a teamn- mate of Mn. Pither on the Oshawa Vikings rugby team. The teamn will depart Toronto on Mardi 14 and fly to Shannon, Ireland. From there they will be bussed to Galway City where they will remain froni Mardi 15 to 1 8. Here the Anderson 'team wiUl play an exhibition match and two games in a rugby tournament - On Mardi 17, Ireland's national holiday, the team will participate in the City of Galway's annual St. Patrick's Day parade, which for Ireland is sornething equivalent' to the Rose Bowl parade in the United States. Mn. Pither hopes the team will be able to carry the Whitby flag in this parade. On Mardi 18 the team goes to Dublin, where the next day the members will watch Ireland play France ini the International Rugby Match championship gamne for the Five Nations Cup. Manch 20 there will be an exhibition gamre for. the Anderson team against a Dublin school teamn, and a visit to Trinity College. There will also be a pony tour of the moors and a visit to the Cliffs of Mawn. March 24 the teain plays a game at Limerick, and will take part in a mnedieval banquet at Bunrathy Castie. After a final game on March 24, the Anderson teami returns to Whitby. The 37 boys going to Ireland actually make up two teanis, senior and junior. "We will be playing top flight rugby teams and it will be a tribute for our sehool if we do well", says Mr. Pither. "We sed three times as inuch tirne pneparing for the trip itself'. So far the Anderson team has held 15 practices for the Ireland trip. Mr., Pithen thinks the Anderson team is in a good position to do well. The school has played rugby for six yeans, and won an All-Ontario seven-a-side rugby championship in 1974. Eight high schools in the region play rugby, and Anderson, Dunbarton and Pickering are recognized as having the top teams, he says. One Anderson playen, Wayne Morton, played the position of hooker for the Ontanio Junior Rugby Team which came second in the Canadian championships at Winnipeg-iast August. Wayne, and two other team-mates are also members of the Oshiawa Vikings. The total cost for air fare, accommodation, '-meals and transportation amounts, to $20,540, and the students have been liard at work raisîng the money. The father of one of the boys permnitted themn to dlean a wood lot for him at Port Perry and sell the wood at $20 to $25 a -cord. It was liard wonk, but the team made $841 from tlie sale of the wood. They have also sold McDonald Restaurant coupons, liosted school dances, and set up poois on the NFL football games and the Super Bowl. Mr. Pithen hopes the team i wll receive a Wintario grant of $3,000. This week the tearn will raffle off a trip for two to Florida and a side of beef. Despite the fund-raising activities, the team membens will have to bear personal costs of $325 which includes Members of the Anderson Collegiate rugby team which travels to Ireluid next ,nonth, pose for a going-away picture. In the second row at left is Vice-Principal Ray Litt, who Win be johuing the students un the trip, and at right is Ron Pither, the coach and originator of the trip 10 Ireland. Fe rs ht thein unitonnis. Mr. Pîther explains that Rugby, sometimes called Rugger, is not the sanie as the North Amenican game of football. Originially a Britishi game, Rugby does not stop and start like football, but is a game of continuous action. There is no forward passing, and more kicking. Also thene is no protective equipment wonn like in football, just a teani sweater and football shoes. Mr. Pither says the game of rugby lias less injuries than football because thene is no equipment to use as a weapon. With only a month to go before they leave, the Anderson rugby team is busy getting in last-minute practices, and arranging the teclinical details of financîng the trip, undoubtedly the highlight of the school year for those particilpating. Mary Browns to win titie despite BU wîan ville Whitbyt's MaryLUrowns tied Bowmanville 2-2 in a resclieduled -Minon Midget league game ian. 30 at the Bnooklin arena, but despite the tie, the Mary Browns should win the league tille by one point over Ajax. The result of the game against Bowmanville was intended 10 determine the league winner. At present Ajax lias completed its schedule and is tied with Brooklin-Whitby at the top of the league. If Brooklin- tie -wmanville, Ajax would be the league champs by virtue of the fact that they have a better win-loss record over Brooklin- Whitby during the season. Ed Derks scored the. two goals for Brooklin-Whitby against Bowmanville, and the tie changed the expected outcomne of the contest.
