WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 23,1977, PAGE 9 Cottage 5 at psychiatric hospital Youth crisis centre celebrates its second anniversary ing a suitable placement rather than having need of the service. Cottage 5's specialized role means that it is constantly involved with interagency planning and coordination of service to adolescents. Thettreatment programme in Cottage 5 aims at pro- viding extensive structure and safety 'in order to reduce anxiety and aid in building relationships. The child care workers, who are directly involved with adolescents on a daily basis, help each adolescent tf set overall treat- ment goals as well as daily goals. The daily schedule includes: a morning meeting in which both staff and young people set goals for the day, academics,r occupational therapy, group therapy, and activity times for recreation, gamés, sports, etc. Also, many adolescents receive individual or family therapy as needed. Each adolescent is placed on a level, from one to five, which designates the degree of support or super- vision that is needed. When youngstersare in major distress such as acute depression or impulsivity states, they may be placed on a level 1 or 2, with constant staff contact. Later, when they are moving out of thecrisis stages, tlaey may be placed on a level 4 or 5, allowing for increased free- dom, movement outside the cottage, etc. Staffing in the Cottage 5 programme is basically pro- vided by child care workers on round the clock shifts. In addition to front' ine workers, there are two child care supervisors, a social worker, a teacher, a consult- ing psychiatrist, a nurse, and the services of psychology, recreational, andoccupational therapy staff. The director of the adolescent unit is Dr. Jim Ricks.
