WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 13, 1977, PAGE 9 Continued from last week County Town Singers celebrate 1Oth anniversary 1973 The feature of the evening was the Homecoming Waltz, written by Julian and Jean Beecroft, and perform- ed by the Singers and the Whitby Brass Band. Another event was partici- pation in the Glenn Smith LOVE concert for retarded children, in Oshawa. In August, the Liederhort Tosters, the choir from Feldkirch in Austria, visited Whitby, and the County Town Singers were their hosts. Other events of the year included a community carol sing at the Four Corners at Christmas, and the passing out of flyers inviting the new residents of West Lynde to the "County Town Christmas". 1974 In 1974 the Singers visited Feldkirch in Austria, and gained the title of Canada's Singing Ambassadors. After a triumphant tour of Europe, they returned home with a truly international reputation. At home there were plenty of events too. A Regional Grand Ball was hosted by the Singers to inaugurate the new Region of Durham, they sang at the 52nd conference of the Ontario Real Estate Association at Oshawa, and at the official opening of the Iroquois Park Arena. A bon voyage concert at the County Town Carnival drew the largest crowd ever to attend at the new arena, more than 2,500 people. Also in 1974, choir mem- ber Lou Goverde designed a symbolt or the Singers w is still being used. 1975 This year the Singers duced their second long p ing record, "The Sounds the County Town Sing and made a special copy the World Plowing Mi which included a song ca "Measured Furrows", wri by choir member Clare Burgess. For a second time, they sang for the Ontario Real Estate Association Convention, the Oshawa Fiesta Week and the Oshawa- Whitby United Way concert. The Singers made their second television appearance, on the Channel 11 program "New Faces" which featured the talent of the Town of Whitby, and they gave a free concert for senior citizens at the Lions Club of Agincourt. In November they held a 12-hour Sing-a-thon which raised $4,000 for a future trip to Austria. 1977 The Singers were on hand for the official opening of Whitby's new municipal building, where they sang "Bless This House", starting off a very active year. On April 27 they sing at the Royal York Hotel for the Transportation Club of Toronto, on May 3 for the Adanac Friendship Club in Scarborough, on May 10 for the Business and Professional Club of Port Hope, on May 25 at Cedarbrae Collegiate for the Agincourt Lions Club, and from June 20 to 25 at Oshawa's Fiesta Week. Whitby's County Town Singers have come a long way in 10 years and are a credit to their community. Few towns the size of Whitby have produced a choir that has done so much in so short a time. Volunteers get grant The Volunteer Association for Durham Centre for the Developmentally Handi- capped has received a Whitby 'Town Grant of $200 to be used for the volunteer operated canteen in Cottage 8. President of the Association, Joan Shaubel, says "Now we can brighten the place up".
