New basebail diamonds readyl Two new basebali diamonds in Iroquois Park, north of the arena, will go into service this year to ease the lieavy load on thSctown's existing diamonds. A liardball diamond con- structed last year will go into service wlien the basebal season opens in May, and be used by the Whitby Merchants Senior team and minor league hardball clubs- The second dianiond, for softball, could be ready early this' season, says Deputy Recreation Director Fred Beckette. Construction of the diamond began this week. A clubhouse and conces- sion stand located between the liardball and softball diamonds is proposed for 1979. Until this facilitY is provided, the team playing on the diamonds will use the change rooms in the arena. The recreation deoartrnent lias plans to construct a second ice pad on tlie arena next year, a soccer field with liglits also in 1978, and six tennis courts with liglits in 1979, subject to council approval. This year the town intends to erect a sign displaying comin2 events at Iroquois 4-4 tie in soccer game beteenWhitby & Victoria and Henry Streets. Bantams defeat Juniors In exnîoition soccer play at Peel Park on Wednesday, May il the bantam Crown, Industrials defeated the more experienced Junior teami 5-1. To counteract the juniors fast running forward line the bantams set up and executed a very effective defensive sys- tern using the off-side rule to full advantage whicli com- pletely snuffed out any defensive junior thrust in the first haîf while the younger bantamn front five were creat- ing havoc at the other end which resulted in a 4-0 score in favour of Crown Industrial at the interval. A goal by Robbie Frendo- Cumbo early in the second hiaif put the juniors on the scoreboard but in the dying minutes of the gamne, with the juniors defense tiring, the bantains popped in another. Scoring for the bantamis were Dave Cmni with two <(one fromn the penalty shot), John Longmnuir, Stuart Craig and Steve Gallagher. In a previous garne the juniors camne out on top by a score of 4-3. The Carretto Restaurant and Tavern Soccer team frorn Whitby and Oshawa Club Lore- ly played to a 4-4 tie in a Pee-Wee exhibition gamne at Peel Park in Whitby on Monday May 16. Ricky Didanien missed on a penalty shot that would have given Oshawa the garne hadj lie scored but the tie was a fair resuit of a very even game.
