WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 1, 1977, PAGE 5 Corridor Capers 'Its back to the Buses'. Comniittee reports have been floating around for a couple of years outlining bus transportation statistics. The principle of having a depend- able bus service sounds great. The actual usage for the cost involved in horrendous. Last year a trial service was initiated. In actual fact, something like 150 persons per week, took advantage of the service. This would hardly indicate the necessity for an overall bus service in the Town of Whitby. There is no doubt that a very few people would be constant bus commuters. Iroquois Park is located in an out-of-the-way part of the Town and limited transportation could be an asset. Most parents, in our area, ensuring safety en route. Senior Citizens and handicapped would not have to be house-bound, if the Town took advantage of the 'legal opinion' they requested from Queens Park, outlining the fact that it was 'indeed' legal for the Town of Whitby to subsidize this segment of our population with affordable transportation in the form of Taxi service. This would not only assist Seniors, but would be beneficial to the already established transportation within the Town of Whitby. Even a taxi company offered to help subsidize the plan but, as yet, very little lias been done in this area. The People demonstrated last year that the necessity for a bus service was virtually nil. One lady told nie last year, how nice it was to have bus service, but as she was the only passenger on the few occasions she used it, she wondered if the Town could afford to establish a Public Transit Service for her to go shopping. The concept certainly has merit, if the people of Whitby will commute by bus. Maybe an updated report will reveal more usage if the Transit svstem is established. TAKE JUNE BEEN Glancing through a local paper, 1 noticed that a Pickering company had a loss of 700 jobs since 1975. It was also pointed out that no Federal or Provincial representatives had visited the Company to determine the cause of the rnanpower reduction. Dr. Godfrey, our M.P.P. and Norm Cafik, our M.P. should have twelve lashes with a wet noodie for such blatant neglect. I must be under the false impression that 'the People elect Provincial and Federal representatives to take careof problens occuring within their jurisdiction'. Surely, with both of these men living within the proximity of the Pickering Area, this matter would have been brought to the attention of their respective governments by now. Must we always wait until an election to inforn people? You boys are slipping. It would appear you have been derelict in your dutv Giant Bavarian Beer Festival The weather was beautiful. The German food superb and the crowd, 1000 + enjoyed a gala evening. Iroquois Park vibrated with the sounds from the Bavarian Band. The Jaycees did a tremendous organizing job. Have another Festival soon. Congratulations. Election '77 An 'All Candidates' forum will be held in the Centennial Building on Thursday June 2 (to-rnorrow). Dorvis Developnent To those of you in the Applewood area, the subdivision for Dorvis will be discussed Administrative Conmittee on Monday June 6 Plan to attend. TENNIS ANYONE? Free Press Photo Oshawa buses could run on Whitby routes According to Councillor Gerry Emm, Oshawa could run bus routes into Whitby along Rossland Road and Dundas Street. Last week Councillor Emm informed council he had dis- cussed the matter with Durham Region Chairmoan Walter Beath, and Queen's Park feels that something can be donc about moving buses along those arteries. The only problen says Councillor Emn is that Charterwaysowns the franchise for the route on Dundas Street, but this could be over- corne by buying the rights for this section of the route, lie said. Since Dundas Street is the busiest route in Whitby, it would soon be known if a bus service in Whitby would operate inI the black or in the red. WEEK OF 1977 HAS. A STUDENT plan for at the at 7:30.
