The program, Camnp Self- Employees walk ont over ruling About 140 hourly-rated employees at Croven Ltd. on Beech Street walked off the job Friday mnorning when the company agreed to comply with an anti-inflation board decision on their confract. The workers, miembers of Local 1090 of the United Auto Workers, were protest- ing the company withholding 23 cents of a 30-cent-an-hour increase that was negotiated for the second year of a contract which took effect June I1. The company is plaeing the money in a trust fond pending a final decision by the AIB administrator. Xhen the contract was signed a year ago il provided a 50-cent hike to $450 an hour for most workers in the plant during the first year and 30 cents in the second year. Cliff McCarten, president of the company, which niakes quartz crystals for radio andi rnicrowave systems, said the AIB ruied the total package xvas "in excess of guidelines" and the comnpany decided to comply with the ruling. Tihe company feels the strike which ocurred Friday is illegal, as the AIB xiii probably -order a rollback, said Mr. McCarten. A meeting was planned Monday between the com- pany and the union, %vilh a provincial mediatnr prescrit. Help has been dcsigned to offe r a wide range o f educational, occupational, and recre ational oppo rtunities to youth which will enable thern to help thenmselves. Chiidren needing special attention in reading and mathernatics wil have the opportunity of improving thernselves through a special tutoring service. This pro- grarm is prirnarily for students fromi grades on1e to six and is specially set for the chiid who is finding difficulty keeping up and xvotid like to miake a good beginning at schooi next fait. As a child miay resent the fact of being involved in a sumnmer educationai program while his friends are piaying, the prograin has been designed to make summier learning fun. A special Camp Leadership Training program has been designed for boys and girls 14 to 16 years oid. This group will spend part of its timne as participants in the regular camip program at Heber Dovnm Conscrvation Area. while reserving a major portion of its lime for a special leadlership prograin. This course deals with camnp objectives, camip prograin and activities, and the growth and behavior ý of ehiildren at different ages, The prograrn wiii give the counsellors in training a chance to work with actual zanpers applying, and practicing the theoretical techniques and skills lie or she hias been sludying. A special part of tire over- ail prograru xvii be to co-ordi- nate an odd job service to, refer young students to tern- porary jobs in private homes; such as babysitting, lawn mowing, household chores. and nmany many more.
