WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JULY 6,1977, PAGE i Bi Midget base bail tourn ament July.16 ,Area basebaîl fans have a big weekend coming up on July 16, and 17 when the Whitby Minor Basebaîl Assoc- iation and the Oshawa Legion Basebaîl Association join forces to co-host the sixth Whitby-Oshawa Midget Tournamlent. The annual event, which has quickly corne to be acknowledged as one of the premier affairs for rnidget clubs in the province, attracts some of Ontario's top clubs to the area for the two day compe ti tion. Sixteen clubs are entered and on the opening day four parks, Kinsmen Stadiumi in Oshawa, Iroquois Park, Peel Park and E.A. Faiîrian in Witby are used to narrow the field to eight clubs for the second day. Twenty-three games are required to declare the tour- nament champion and the final gaine is held alternately in Oshawa and Whitby. This year's final will be played at Iroquois Park in Whiitby. In its brief history the tournament lias been plagued by so'me atrocious weather, but always the officiais of the two groups have been able to keep things literally afloat and finish the tourney. Last year a violent thunide r storr'n created a two hour delay in the final day's schedule but with a heroic effort W.M.B.A. workers gol the field at E.A. Fairman in shape and fînished the serni- final game between Hamniltor and Chatham. Belleville carried off the honours in '76, defeating: Waterloo, Listowcl, Harniltoni and Scarboro Village on their way to tlie tournarnent crovhî. Previous winniers have been Scarboro Village, Hamilton Mahoney, Scarboro Bircli- <ount, and South Windsor. Sixteen games will be played on Saturday July 16, and seven on the final day. Bacli club entering the event is guaranteed two games, with losers in the second round being eliminated, the eight winners advancing to the third round quarter finals. This kind of contest does neither club any good and makes a mockery of the game. The K of C's outhit Ajax 1 804, and they were given a big boost in their scoring by the Ajax motind corps who yielded 36 walks. Jeff Hialey and Greg Fulis each with four hîts led the Whitby club at the plate, Jackie Robertson and Troy Bates ecdihad three, Gord Muscliett and Ross Taylor each had a pair, Scot McGibbon, Shelden Ginns. and Greg lanarilli. added singles. The K of C's used three pitchers, Ray Ryan, Greg lanarilli and Pauil Guest. The K of C's are creeping dloser to their pre-season objective of playing .500 basebaîl and are on the fifth rung in the seven club loop with a 5-6 record. BANTAM In E.O.B.A. bantami action Whitby hiad a split, edging Peterboro 3-2 and dropping a 1 475 decision to Trenton. The loss, the worst defeat of the season for the Xhitby club, was primarily the result of sorne atrociouis fielding as Whitby came uip with a record six errors. ln the offensive departmnent the Whitby club was close, gýarner- ing nine hits to teil for Trenton buit thieir miscuies spellecl out the dlifference. Murray McCorkell hiad a big nighit withi fouir singles, Ruiss Jubenville had a paiir of one-baggcrs, while Steve Gallaghier, Charlie Meitner and Dennis Fulton added singles, Mike Welling was tagged witli the loss but with some better play in the field frorn Ihis mates could have had a be#ier fate.
