Whitby Chamber1o -Brian Wlflter -Jim Quail -Marie Burgess -Robin Lyon --Marefle ByrorT -Sharon Lyon t No. 460 rof the: urbau of Toronto of Comerc - The YMCA is no place for polities The latest "tempest in a teapot" to arise ini Our-towl, is the dispute over the Ajax-Pickering YMCA en- croaching into territory up tili now under the jurisdiction of the Durham Region YMCA. We tend ta agree wit h Bey Koven, regional director of the Ajax-Pickering Y, that it is an internai matter to be settled between the Durham Regiran and Toronto YMCAs. The situation can become much more complicated when the politicians enter the debate, and a social agency dedicated to the healtby development of our youtb becomes a politicial football. Once such matters enter the political field, it is like open- ing a "Pandora's Box" of troubles. Let the local YMCAs or even the Y's national conimittee work this one out. To us it seems that the Durham Region Y should have jurisdiction over Ajax- Pickering, for a number of reasons. First, it is the "Durham Region" Y by a vote of its own board of directors, and Ajax sud Pickering are part of the Durham Region. The Durham Y is working to expand out of Whitby into the region, and this is a good thing and should be encour- aged, as long as it is done wisely and with care to see that the Y does flot take on more than it can handle. Secondly, the Durhamn Region Y is already supported by the Ajax-Pickering United Way, thus establishing which organization is financed by public fuuds donated fi-arn the people who will benefit from its services. Thirdly, the Durham Y was there first, and 'why should it be chaflenged by a branch of the saine organiza- tion firn Metro Toronto? Clearly, the YMCA mnust get its own bouse ini order, and flot leave the situation up to the politicians to settle. The ares YMCAs are autono- mons organizations under a national committee. It i5 up to the local boards ta settle their own differences, and if they cannot do it at that level, they should submit the dispute ta the National waty , and -political wrangling over whos territory la whose wlIl do nobody any good.
