The Landfilll site1 may be expanded An expansion of the oid Whitby iandfill site, closed last year, could be a short- term solution to the region's landfili needs, says a report tabied at regional council last week. The report, commissioned by regional coundil, suggests a further study to permit on-site driiiing and monitering for runoff and possible pollution problems. The 3 1-acre site near Brooklin was. closed -at the end of 1976 because it had reached its capacity, but the region is faced with a probiem because the Oshawa site on Ritson Road has almost reached its capacity. The region is considering extending the Brooklin site to add 33 acres to meet the increasing demnand for garbage disposai sites. Meanwhlle, new sites are being sought. Three mnonths ago, the Ontario Environment Mînistry rejected the use of a 267-acre site on the Newcastle-ScugOg boundary because*of danger of serious water pollution. counicil iast week is oniy the first phase of a study for expanding the Brooklin land- fil site, and indicates the site is suitabie without adverse effects on ground or surface waters. Phase one of the study costs $6,000. The second part, which costs $34,000 is expected to take seven mnonths to coniplete, and has received funding approval from the region.
