Psychiatrie hospital accidents cost $13,000 in one month A sharp increase in em- ployee accidents is concern- ing the management of the Whii T 364 in s Vandalism mayor anc Vandalism, hooliganism and harassment at town recreational facil' ies may force the town te lock up these facilities, Mayor Jim Gartshore warÙed at a recent coufleil meeting. The mayor said unless these activities can be curbed, extra policing will be re- quired or the buildings might even have to be locked up. Recreation Committe. Chairman Bob Attersley ex- pressed concern about van- dalism in the town'sbuildings, and harassment of the people who use them. Restraints dan gerous Government restraints at the Whitby Psychiatric Hos- pital could lead to tragedy and loss of life dlaim officiaIs of Ontarios public service unions. According to Neil Pollock, public relations officer for the _ Oetario 1Pblic Service Employees Union, the situa- tion is growing especially severe at the psychiatric hos- pital where the staff size is shrinking, and the over-ali workloads have increased. "We have mental hospitals where there is only one per- son on the night shift for an entire floor, ... eve n two floors," said Mr. Pollock. He expressed concern about the safety of the staff because some of the patients are dangerous to themselves or others. According to Mr. Pollock Ontario Treasurer Darcy McKeough's bid for a balanced budget by 1981 will mean the loss of 6,000 public service jobs by the end of 1978. He is concerned that poli- ticians say that none of the job losses will cost the tax- payer any loss of service, "but we see more examples of the loss every day." Ken Thibeau, nead of the 120-member OPSEU Local 232 at the Durham Centre for the Developmentally Handicapped, says that he has little doubt that it will take somethina like a fire or a death to bring theunion's viewpoint clearly before the nuiblic. He considers that with counsellors preparing break- fast and washing patients, the lack of proper supervision leaves the door open for al- most any sort of human disas- ter. Russ Whitney, a represen- tative for Durham Region locals of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, says the government should try to make savings in "non-people" areas such as capital expendi- tures for roads and sewers.
