Whitby Chambera -Brian Winter -Jim Quail -Marje Burgess -Robin Lyonl -S. van Deelen -Sharon Lyon t No. 460 w of the: ireau of Toronto. ofCmmece Congratulations -for. 50 years of service, Legion Branch 112 Last week Branch 112 of the Royal Canadian Legion celebrated the Sth anniversary of the granting of its char- ter, which occurred on Dec. 9,1927. For 50 years the Legion bas been an integral part of the Town of Whitby, contributing to the welfare of the conimu- nity in coutless ways. In the 1930s, when the Legion was young, and the county in the mnidst of a disastrous depression, the Legion offered to relieve the town of the duties of caring for needy veterans and their familles. During those same difficit years, the Legion, jointly with the town band the Rotary Cluib, sponsored street fairs to raise money and provide an entertaining diversion from the worries of the tirne. During the Second World War, the Legion workcd ith the Whitby War Effort Conmittee and other orgafliatlofls to provide for the needs of Whtby boys overseas. After the war, the Legion began sponsorship of miinor sports teams, provided equipment for Fairvie-.Y Lodge, money for the Dr. Ruddy Hospital Building Fund, and niany other community projects too nurnerous to mention. Today the Legion bas been active for 10O years in the County Town Carnival, with the Carnival Queen Contcst being its major project. Throughout the last 50 years the Legion hias been re- sponsible for the annual observance of Rernemnbrance Day, s0 that Whitby residents will not forget what their fellow citizens of years gone by did for the freeJorn of oui country. It provides us with a sense of continiiity that thiere are four of the original 17 charter rnembers of Branch 1 12 stili living, and one, Fred James, took an active part in the celebrations of the 5th anniversary last Thursday. Whitby owes much to the Legion and it does well for us to remnember that it is organizations like this that are the strength and backbone of our community. ilir uily T Iltuyilcwpupr l&Ucplluilty uwiuuliuqupvatu qe EL-E '~Q4o V, q, I/JEg 4.IKEP i.,7<9 .PE/V fIORE 41(0 5/VE LE: IOL/ER-EX<-EVEV , 15ffF 0J/VY COt/N77?Y"' Flooding history is sought Dear Sir: As one of itsfunctions, the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority acts to minimnize the po- tential threat of floods within the region via leg- isiation, work projects, and a flood-warning sys- temn.
