Councillor Bob Carson and a local doctor, Dr. John Tomnas, who lives on the Ashburn Road, spearheaded the move to reduce the speed limit, because of concern about the danger of spee ding cars and trucks to children and other pedestrians on the Year 's Soiree with themn Jan..2 fromi 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Kings Crescent and Burcher Street, Ajax. King's Crescent is east roa d. Dr. Tomas said children were not always careful when they walked on the road and were too young to be ex- pected to use proper judge- ment. H-e said a numiber of child- ren had been hit by flying stones kicked up by speeding cars. Councillor Gary Herrema, who is flot from Whitby, told the works committee he had examined the road and said there were only a few homes that would be affected by speeding cars, and the flying stones seemed to be more of a concern to the residents than the cars. Scouts active in West Lynde The West Lynde Comn- munity Association continues to be an active part of WhtbY. The association is currently sponsoring the 7th Whitby Scout Group which consists of 'about 100 boys and 20 aduit leaders. A Scout troop has been formed and will be meeting at King Street Publicj School on Monday at' 7:30 p.mn. A Il parents of boys, and any other interested aduits or memnbers of the group committee are invited to at- tend meetings held in the Science Room at West Lynde Public School on the second Thursday each month at 7:30 p.m. it is at these meetings that ail decisions regarding the funcioning of the group are made. Currently the Scouts are looking for* one more Beaver leader for the younger boys. Present leadérs are Gi Wood, Lois McCullah, Merridy Watt, Fay Drew, Stewart Drew,John Giles and Peter Miller. One of the Scout's major projects is the paper drive on the second Saturday of each month, which provides funds for the acquisition of camping gear. The next paper is Jan. 14. The 7th Whitby Scouts' from Harwood Avenue be- tween Highway 401 and Bayly Street. Movie, Iog o and intense mail campaign part of regi'onal promotion program Durham Region's promo- tional plans,to be carried ont with financial assistance from the provincial government, include a mnovie, a logo, and an intense mailing and in- person campaign. The details of the promo- tion were approved last week by regional council. The provincial government will provide $ 165,000 of the $250,000 expected to be spent on the two-year cam- paip. The campaign will be evaluated every few months to determine the best use of the dollars spent, said Indus- trial Development Officer Bob Nicol. Aniong the projects in the promotion campaign is a 15- minute color movie on tape cassettes, highlighting Durharn's industrial areas. Another is a logo which would encompass the essence of Durham and acquaint out- siders with the region and its potential. Whitby Regional Council- lor Joy Thompson disagreed with hiring a professional de- signer for the logo, stating there are artists and other people inside and outside the region who would like to have a chance to design it. Mr. Nicol said the logo would cost about $3,000 to $4,000. He suggested the the region's eighit municipali- ties should design separate brochures which can be in- cluded in a kit on the region to be sent to potential cus- torners. The designs for the brochures would be left L1p to the local municipalities, he said. Another suggestion fromn the 17 recommendations made by Mr. Nicol was radio advertising in the Toronto area because it is "the largest market in Canada." Also, there would be newspaper ads in the Financial Post and other business papers in Canada and the United States which could be translated in to Italiani, French. and German for the European markets. Mr. Nicol also suggested a Community Profile Resource Book which could be taken to semninars and shown to industrialists from around the world. About 200 books would also be on file at the hbad offices,> of banks, rail- roads, realty firms and embassies.
