Sedentary jobs, poor physical conditioning, emotional tension and the stresses of home, office and society, are but somne of 'the causes re- lated to lower back pain. f al'the îlls to the body, none is more common, excruciating or inicapacitating as that as- sociated, with the ,back area., Anyone who has s tarted a, tennis swing, bent over.to tie a shoe or even turned a door knob, cant tie into knots those little-used back muscles. For those back problems not caused by injury or physi- cal deficiencies, the1 ususal treatment is rest. However, the Durhami Region' Fainily YMCA is offering a unique and -nationally approved ex- ercise, program,' known as "The Y's Way To A -Healthy Back". The raison d'etre for this relief is through the re- education of back muscles. Over 300 Y's in North Ainericâi utili7ze this program with many participants re- porting 80% improvement. The- parameters of the Y program (relaxing,' toning, stretching) 'hlot only aid the reduction 'of pain but also can prevent it from recurrrig. Not everyone will achieve sucli dramatic resuits but the format wili not worsçn an individualI's existing .condition. Response has varied from ,definite ifnprovement tc> pain elimination. Under the, supervision of a .qualified YMCA instructor, the participan ts perform a variety of exercises designed by Dr. H. The club reports that several families were helpéd and gifts were presented to residents of Fairview Lodge who do not have close famniiy members to visit at Christmas. for individuais who suffer from lower ýback problems. The YMCA emphasises that there is nothin& miraculous about the exercises- or the program. WeUl-known ex- emises are used, but the key is fin a welI-supervised back training program devised for harried executives, sedentary workers,' homemakers, the active labour force; in fact, anyone who is piagued wth lower back discomfort. Heavy snowfall caused- del.ay Although 'somne' pe ople have- expressed concern about Whitby's snow removal procedure so far this winter, there should be no major problems unless there is an untisually large amounit of snow, says Public Works Director Dick Kuwahara. Mr. Kuwahara says that in 10 days in December, 20 inches ofsnow fell, with one snow fail comiîng so, close after another that'the works crews had not been able to complete the cleanup from the first fali before another oPne came. This is unusu'al, he said, for in 1976 Whitby had 27 inches of snow for the whole month of December and 28 inches in 1975,. In 1974 there was only four and, a half indhes of snow in December,, le said. The only difference in Iclearing, this. year is that the town' has set priority roads to clear ýfirst,- says Mr. Kuwahara. These are major arterial routes sudh as Coch- ranle, Anderson and Garden Streets and the routes to the industïial areas. Four specific routes are cleared first and the local Étreets follow. Clearing of local streets is usually done during regular working-hours, but in times of heavy snowfali the crews continue until the job is done. Mr.- Kuwaha'ra said many of the i 4-man snow removal (rew worked for 30 hours without a break to handie the December snowfalls. Différent parts of the town present different snow ciearing problemrs, says Mr. Kuwahara. In the rural area, wind causes blowing and drifting, so0 that- roads have to be cieared on a continuùai basis. In the downtown, the me- moval of~ snow usually takes two days, and can take up to a week if the removal is e.4- tended several blocks along Dundas Str eet, he said. Parked cars cin obstruct the crews anci prolvng, the re- ,moval work, lie said. Another r.roblem faced this year -was the best use of sait and sand, says Mr. Kuwahara. Last, year theý works, department received cornplaints that it used too much sait so- this year the crews started.out with a sailt and sand mixtu're. .< It did flot succeed in mieit- ing the ice on the streets, and caused one councillor to say the streets were like skating rinks. The town, therefore, has gone back to the pure sait for treating icy roads, says Mr. Kuwa4ara. The biggest complaint re- ceived about snow removal is plows filling in cleared-out driveways, says Mr. Kuwahara.' Nothing much can be done to rectify this problem, he- says, because of technical, limitat- ions. A plowcan only clear a strip eight feet wide, so it has to make two passes each side of a street to clear the snow from centre to curb, says Mr. Kuwahara. After the firsýt pass, a resictent may clear«his' driveway, only to tiave, it' filled in by the plow on its second pass. SMr. Kuwahara says that the bliade is fixed and cannot be lifted, for it would leave the snow on the road. There is not much the res- idents can do about this prob. lemn, but the town expects to get new equipment in the near future with wider blades which can clear a street in one pass, he said. Therefore, once the plow has gone by, a person can clear his driveway and flot worry about it being filled in again. 1920 Whitby 'hockey teani had film star's name The death of Charlie Chaplin on Christmas Day evoked many memories of his film career among older people who remnember "The Littie Tramp" from the days of the silent movies. ' Some older Whitby resi- dents may remnember the days when Whitby had a hockey team cailed the Charlie Chaplins, and each member of the team wore a sweater with the actor's face on it. A copy of an old photo- grapli in the Whtby Histor- ical Society Archives tells us that the Charlie Chaplinswere winners in the Whitby Town League in 1920. G. O'Connor was the manager of the teamn and the players were: E. Dudley, sub centre; W. Moo re, sub right defense; G. Brown, goalie; R. Smith, right defense; W. Moore, sub right wing; E. Fogan, cenhtre; D. Waitems, rigît wing; and H. Peilowleft wing. The donor of the cup which the Charlie Chaplins won was E. Maundreli. It is interesting to look back to the days whenChariie Chaplin was such a popular figure that the Town of Whitby lad a hockey team namned after him. It would be even miore interesting if there was more of a record of this teamn than just one faded photograph.
