Tonl, 58, who was the first lay president of the Toronto Conference of the United Churcli, was brought up in Whitby and attended the Ontario Ladies' College.- 1In 1977 she was noniin- ated as moderator of the United Church, the highest office in the church organ- ization, but' had to decline because of illness. No woman bas ever held the post. Mrs. Toil was born in Toronto March 16, 199, and moved to Whitby at the, age of one month. Her father was Graydon Goodfellow, publisher of the Whitby Gazette and Chron- icle. Mr Goodfellow was very 1prommnentini Wlutby, being chairman of the.,Board of Education, a Master 'of Composite Lodge AF & AM, a charter memnber of the Whitby Rotary Club and a member of the Bo'ard of Go.vernors of the Ontario Ladies' College foi more than 25 years. >From 1929 to 1936, with the exception of one year at the Whitby High School, Mrs. Toîl attended the Ontario Ladies' College. She *graduated in 1935, but re- turned ini 1936 to take a degree in muic. She graduated from the Univers- ity of Toronto in 1937. In 1935 she was editor of the school yearbook, and won-,the Governor General's Medal for highest standing in her graduating. class. She also had the highest standing in, Latin and Frenchi. In the early 1 940s she married LeRoy Toit, who was a well known Toronto photo- grapher who specialized in graduation portrait'. He and his brother were also noted for being-world travellers and presented4 filmed travelogues througiiout Ontario. Mrs. Toit was deeply in- volved i churcli work throughout lier liée. Her husband's father and grand- father were niinisters at the Whitby United Church (now St. Mark's United) in 1934 and 1935.
