Many of the town's residents were lawyers and ju.dges Who worked in the court system ,which operated from: 'what is now the Centennialpuilding on Centre Street South. The first Ontariô' Coun ty Judge, w ho was ini charge of the -county courts for 42 years, was Zacheus Burnham, who iived in a large brick house on Byron Street North. Zacheus Burnham was a son of John Burnham<i, a native of New Hampshire. He was born' March 31, 1819 in- the Township of Hanilton,County of tNothumberland, Ontario. He received bis literar y education at the, Cobourg Grammar School, and studied law with bis eider--brother Elias Burnham, at Peterborough. He, finished bis. legal studies with thé' Hon. Robert BaldWin, who was the leader* of the government of Upper Canada in the 1840's. ~: B lin Finally we are getting some nice spring weather. Signs of spring are ail around us. If there is anything that is happening in and, around the Brooklin area, Mr. Burnham 'started his own practiceat Port Hope in 1842, and came to Whitby a year later. He was called to the' bar ini 1847, and'continued to vractise until 1852 when he was appointed J 'unior Judge ot the United Counties of York, Peeland Ontario. 4 in 1854 when Ontario County was set off, he was ap- pointed Senior Judge of the nçw County, and continued in that po sition until his death in 1896. Be fbre assumning bis judicial position, he was lke many o f the memnbers of bis famîly,active in politics as a Reformer. Judge Burnhamn was married in October 1848 to Sarah, daughter of John Borlaseý Warren, of Oshawa, who in 1824 was7the first postmaster in Witby. They had one son, John Warren Burnham, who was, clerk of the, court at Port Perry. Mrs. Burnhamn died ini August 1856, and -in June 1870, the judge married her 'sister Helena. They had three children, one of whorn diedin infancy. Another child-,lost his lifeý in a gun accident. While a> young lawyer, Judge'Burnham took his-nephew, R. J.ý Wilson into part-nership with him, and atter the uncle becamne à judge, Mr. Wilson went into practice on his own. The death of his wife, in 1868 brought an unhappy end to Mr'. Wilson's legal careeré., The people on ,Ontario County had great confidence in' Judge Burnham, when ýhe was a-lawyer and lie had a pros- perous career. In 1872, Judge Burnham, who had been the only judge for the. County of Ontario, was aided by the, appointmentofGeorge H. Dartnell as Junior Judge, and the two men shared th-ç> judicial responsibilities of the county from that time.
