Cancer Society's continued work ini fields of research, education and cancer patient service is now almost three weeks old. Campaign Co-Chairman Marion and BiH i rwin are very hopeful that the cam- paign will realîze and per- haps surpass its $22, O0 ob- jective. They would like to encourage ail who donate to wear the ycllow plastic daf- fodils they will receive so that Whitby will be dccked out in sprinigtime yellow. In this way they want to empha- size the hope that there is for ongoing and new treatinent and ultimately cures, for cancer victiM~ similar to the hope we ail have in spring- time for the sunshine, and lovely summer weathcr a- head. For several years now the most vital, section of the April campaign in Whîtby has been the door-to-door canvass for funds. As weli, throughout the year, "In Memoriam" donations have been, and stili are, received from families and friends of, those who have passed away as a result of cancer. This year, the Cancer Society, both locally and throughout the province, is attempting to introduce,- the idea of individuals and organiua- tions sponsoring special events from which ail or som e part of the procccds is donated to the cancer fund. The Irwins have been greatly encouraged in this aspect of thc campaign as several organizations have aireadv responded. The first to do this was, thc Beta Sigma Phi sorority whose members most successfuJly organized and ran'the Daf-, fodil Festival as a "kick-off" to the April campaign month. This not only provid- cd excellent publicity 'and financial, support for the April drive, but it also gave people who purchased the daffodils, beautiful, fresh flowers for a touch of spr ing- tîme, in rcturn tfor their money. As well nIany, local businesses and industries sported the yellow flowers on their counters and desks as a reminder to ahl of thc upcom- ing campaign. Ail Whitby churches cooperated, too, by us ing the Cancer Society's, special daffodil bulletins for their Sunday service on April 2, and several purchased daffodils for their altar tables for that day. The second group to pick up the challenge of the Spe- cial Events program was the Whitby Ambulance'drivers. These men,- thirteen, in ail, under the diriction 6f their supervisor, John Visser, who is also President of the local Cancer Society, held a dance at the Masonic Temple in Whitby on Saturday, April 8. Part- of the proceeds frorn this were turned. over to the cancer campaign. fill-ed balloons to their pa- trons bctween lilam. and 2 p.m. with ail proceeds going to- Whitby's cancer cani- paign. Muriel Jones, the PubliceRLtpations girl for McDonalds, approached Uic Irwins with this offer which was gratefuly received as part of- their Special Events program. This offer will also include Saturday, April 29. The là st' Tuesday- in March, the local Rotary Club listcned to Campaign Co- Chairman, Bill Irwin, also one of its own members, tel of thework b eing.donc in thé fight against cancer, the way in which campaign funds are spent, and the organization behind the April campaign. He told of his wishes to have everyone in Whitby wearing a yellow daffodil, and, to- war!ds this end promoted and On-the-spot raffle for a daf- fodil plant which was then won by local businessman, Geoff Middleton. Ahl Rotar- ians purchasing tickets were given the famiiar plastic daffodil and told to wear it every day in April. From this raffle $58.00 was realized for the cancer campaign.,.-> The following Tuesday, E. A.- Fairman principal, Dwight Swcrdfcger, also Sergeant-at-Arms for the' Club collected another $30. for the campsign w1hen he fined those Rotarians not sporting their plastic daffo- dils on their lapels. Much to his dismay and embarass- -ment, Bill Irwin was caught. His w ife, Marion, says he's worn It every day since. The Irwins hope that indi- viduals and, oroanizations will reahize the fun and per- sonal satisfaction that can be had with these - Special Events and- urge" anyone wishing to helq out to cal them at 668-4339 or Uic local Cancer Society's ofice in Oshawa at 725-1166., They say, as well, that we wil shortly hear more of another special project to support Uic cancer fund and to be spon- sôred by Uic Whitby Kiwanis club.
