" Students on visit to Waterloo Senior studonts and some of their teachers from Henry Street High School visited the university of Waterloo on April 25: to attend a Compu- ter Science Day. The students spent the day learning about computers. They attended lectures dur- ing the morning and in the afternoon usod one of the multi-million dollar compu- ters on the UW campus to find their own solutions to problerns. Those with suf fi- cient knowledge spent the entiro day working with computers with Consultants assisting theni. Students with no previous computer science experi- once- received lectures on problemn solving and actual use of the computer using a FORTRAN-like language called TUTOR. Instruction in FORTRAN and APL languages was available to those students havmng some computer background. IJW bas been offering these "computer science days" to high school students for more than 13 years. Last year, 6,000 students from 176 high schools iun Ontario visited the campus. UW feels it is important to inforni Young -people about compu- ters since increasingly, society is looking to the computing profession to solve its information-proces- smng problems. Waterloo also permits high school students who have completed grade 12 and who have a working knowledge of FORTRAN to enrol in one of its courses (carrying one- haîf credit towards a math- emnatics degree). Students wishing to participate in this course must have the con- sent of their higli school mathematics teacher and their principal. _ W.A.D.Selby C.A.,M..A.B.V. C.J.Roberts *C.A. B.K.Madgett C.A.
