It was 112 degrees F. at Julie's homne at Gosnells, near Perth when she left Australia to spend a year in Canada, and il degrees F. when she arrived at Toronto. Julie is the first student to corne to Whitby under the Rotary CIub's international Select for your youth exchange program, and judging from her exper- lenes so far, her visit ha-s been a success. Bill Irwin, chair man of the Whitby club's y'outh ex- change cornmittee hopes to hâve a students from Whitby picked by Deceniber to parti- cipate in the program in another country. On Mardi 11, Julie cele- brated her 18th birthday with the family of Dr. Ken Hobbs, who are acting as her hosts during thefirst three months of her stay in Whitby. The ýstudent youth ex- changef progra -in is some- thing new for the Whitby' club, although Rotary Clubs in Bowmanville, Oshawa and Ajax-Pickering have already been participating. Julie, who cornes from a country which is very active in the Rotary youth ex- change program, was as- signed to Whitby by District 707. The local Rotary Club provides her with a monthly allowance of spending money. Julie, has finished Grade 12, which is the final grade in Australian high schools, and whcn she returns she has the choice of attending univer- or a nursing course. While she is in Whitby she is taking three Grade 13 subjects at Henry' Street High School, which do not count for marks, but give her plenty of new experiences. Julie chose to take auto mechanics, the Canadian famnily and typing, and says she really enjoys "gruhbing around" in the auto work- shop. Before coming to Whitby, her family neyer even let ber tinker with the lawn mower, she says. Since her arrîval she has feit right at home even though she is in a different country. Bill and Marion Irwin met her at the airport with a "Welcome Julie" sign, and Dr. Hobbs says she has become a member of bis family during her first three months in Canada.
