Julie has already made two trips to Ottawa, once to seeCarleton university, and again on a four-day trip for exchange students in Canda. She has been to Toronto to see the play "The Diary of Anne Frank," and sampled the fare at a Toronto pizza house. Different members of the Whitby Rotary Club have taken Julie out on these special trips. While in Whitby, julie is a roving ambassador of good will, giving talks to the Rotary Club and History and Norman Cafilk, Minister of MulticultulLalis4i, on behaif of Andre Ouellet, Minister of Urban Affairs, presented two grants Monday under the. Municipal -Incentive Grant Program to the Town of Whitby. The grants total $131,009. The Municipal Incentive Grants Program provides an incentive for municipalities to develop more land for, modest size housing units at medium density,. and generally to encourage the economnie use of land, It is also designed to encourage municipalities and provinces to examine their develop- ment standards 'and by-laws in light of accelerated costs and to speed Up the bousing approval process. For eacb unit of eligible housing constructed, municipalities can receive a Ueography classes at Ander- son Collegiate, on life in Australia. She has also been introduced to the Whitby Town Council at oneC of its meetings. Julie was born in England and went to Australia at the age of six. This is her first. international trip since then. She is an ardent letter writer, and keeps her famnily posted regularly on ber activities in Canda. Julie says she is very imrpressed with the people of Canada, who accepted her right away, and the Rotary Club members have -found her to be "very adaptable" to her new surroundings. A Canadian Winter is federal grant of $1,000 under the terms of this Program. To be eligible for the grant, dwelling units must be con- stnucted for permanent nesidency, be self-containéd and connected to municipal piped services consîsting of. waten and sanitany sewers, with roads to a minimum of gravel surface. These grants to the Town of Whitby will be 'used to assist in the construction of 131 family units to be located as follows: 120 units at Burns and Annes Street; and il units at 1701 Charles Street. Mr. Cafik congratulated the Town of Whitby for re- ceiving these *grants and for allowing him to be of assist- ance in obtaining these funds. A presentation of cheques for the grants bas been made to mayor Jim Gartshore. She saw her first NHL ice hockey game at Maple Leaf Gardens March 18. In Australia, field hockey is a popular sport, and there is no ice hockey. .Julie played in an inter- sehool badminton competi- tion at Henry Street High Sebool recently, ber firsi experience witb that sport. In Australia, her interests have been basketball, swim- mning, horseback riding and sailing. She writes, poetry and hopes to have it published, and bas won medals in baîl- roomn dancing. She has worked as a leader at a child holiday activity centre, helped to set up a youtb club, and bas been involved in l)asketball umpiring and coaching classes. Wben Julie returns to ber liome in Western Australia, she wiIl make a full report on her visit to the Rotary Cluib there, and bas already sent reports to tbe club in the mai]. ,The aîms of the programn in wbicb sbe is taking part are to further interi4ational good- wqill and understanding, enable students to advance their education by studying in another country, to broaden their outlook on dif- ferent cultures, and to study and observe alI facets of life inthe countries they visit.
