Rope sculpture and wall bangings, wil ho exbibited by Bey Williams, and Jeweilery and metal sculptures will ho exhibited by Nancy Steele. Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Steele bave known. each other for yesrs, bavlng at- tended, school together at Lawrence Park Collegiate in Toronto i the early 19M0. In 1976 botb artists were selected by a committee of the Ontario Governeut to participate-lu an art sbow at Place Bonaventure iu Montreal during tbe 1976 Olympics. Nancy Steele bas lived i Wbitby since 1976, and Bey Williams lived in Wbltby and Brookiu from 1971 to 1977, until sbe and her husbsnd set up a studio- in a store at Betbany. Botb artiats bave done a cousiderable amount of teachlng, and bave bad shows i many locations in- cluding the Wbitby Arts Station. Mns. Steele bas conducted classes in jeweilery making for adultsanad cbldren at Whitby Ar ts since 1976, and in Janusry 1978 she. was elected te tbe Board 0f Directors 0f Wbitby Arts., She is associated wltb the Metal Arts Guild'and'the Ontario Crafts Council, and was a directer and chairman of'the Craftsman's Advlsory Board for.1976-77.,1 She bas taught ber craft in public achools iFrederick- ton, New Brunswick; Queensborough Junior 111gb Scbool in Ontario; Loyalist College at Bancroft, Ontario. and Victoria Park Secondsry Sehool, Toronto. Mrs. Steele likes people, and faces are a common part of ber sculptures. Oue box festures a face on the inside as well as the outside of tbe lid, wbich sbe says is "Iyour inner self." Another of ber luterests is borses and a number of ber, etchings on braceléts feature these animaIs. MUs. Steele says she ikes to Put somthing of the indivi- dual who commission pieces she is asked to create for people. "The craftsman has a responsibility to the person wbo's* commissioned a work, " she says. Some of ber pieces are tbree dimeusional, and are an off-shoot of ruacrame. One piece, ."Enchanted Forest," la about five by six feet and took two weeks to make, exclusive of the time required for designing. Oue of Mrs. Williamis' most ambitious works was a sculpture 20 by 15 feet, com- missioned for Crestview Place a condominium apart- ment building in Don Mils. Mrs. Williams also does wail bangings and works witb wool, syntheties, horse and goat hair, and spun and unspun sheep's wool. In ard- dition to her freely-made rope sculptures, she does weaving on s loom. One of ber favorite themes la ramn- bows. Mns. Williams bas done commissioued work for Anca Laboratories in Whltby, and both she and Mrs. Steelwill ho teacbing at a Summer Sebool of the Arts at Durham Coilege this year. Botb artists will also ho presenting a, speclal Father's Day demonstration of tbeir work June 18 from 2 p.m. to 5p.m. at tbe Witby Arts Station. Everyone is lnvitd to at- tend the opening reception for tbe Metal and Fibre exhibition at the Station June 2 at 8:30 P.m. The exhibition by these weil known local artists will continue until June 25.
