At a î'ecent operations committee meeting, Council- lor Attersley expressed concern about elderly people in rooming bouses .not being able to afford the cost of smoke detectors if thebylaw before council receives third reading. The smoke detector bylaw has received two readings and if passed, would make smoke.detectors mandatory in ail Wbitby homes by 1980. Councillor Attersley also expressed concern about public reactions to such proposais being legislated by council. Mayor Jim Gart- shore also commented that there is no way of policing the bylaw. He expressed concern that unless tbe bylaw is cbanged, it would die a natural death and nver pass third reading. Councillor Joe Drumm told the committee tbat most of bis constîtuents are in favor of the bylaw, and Pire Chief Ed Croucb said he bad received only one complaint -about it.
