I Businelssmen are-invitedto hielp hosp ital >An' invitation for local businessmen to assist the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital in providing better health care was issued by Peterborough MP John Turner, assistant to Health Minister Dennis Timbreli, Monday. Mr. Turner outlined the new directions being taken in health care in the province at the first* meeting of the Whitby Chamber of Commerce té be held at the psychiatrie hospital. The hospital became a member of the, Chamber this year, and its administrator, Michael O'Keefe is a director of the 'Chamber. Mr. O'Keefe said theWhitby Psychiatric, Hospital has 505 bcds, 460 patients, and a staff of 750. The hospital has an annual budget of $16 million, he said. Mr. Tuner told the Chamber members that the principal advantage of a dloser relationship between lod hospitals and businessmen is the opportunity to get more public involvement in the province's health, system. "We want more public involvement because this is a period of significant change in ontario's health care," said Mr. Turner. "Many of the traditional ways 0f doing things are beîng chal)cnged. In part, these changes bave been prompted by i'sing-,osts-lý lie pointed out. that ovêr the past decade, healtb costs have been rising faster than government expenditures asp whole, while the slowdown in the economy lbas belped expose the disproportionate.share of wealth that goes to governrnent. The solution would'seemn to be to cut, services, said mr. Turner, but this would not make much difference to the health budget. ,Mr. Turner said tliat studies have shown that Ontario's health care systern is not as rational as it should be, with intensive care being prMvded at great expense to people who do not need it, and institutions bave been over-emphasised when less costly alternatives could be as effective. "We have been spendîng a lot of money on emergency care, when the real need is for less costly alternative forms of care," he said. "In other words, we may be providing services efficiently, but they aren't always the right services. That's one of the reasons why our systern bas become so costly." Mr. Turner told the Chamber members the governinent bas developed a four-part strategy to mneet the problems he, outlined. First , the goverument is de-empbasizing the active treatment hospital; secondly, it is developing alternative forms of care that are less intensive and less costly; third, ut Is decentralizing the system to make it more sensitive to local needs; and fourth, it is putting more empliasis on preventive medicine,"bY encouragîng responsible lifestyles and more involvement by the public. o ' re!j ected ninlsago, askigfor a, review 0fDurham's regienl governinent.
