SATURDAY & SUNDAY FREE ADMISSION Two members of the Whitby Public Utilities staff grab hold of a live 44,000 volt power Une as they install a new electrical supply line to DuPont of Canaaa. The work they are doing 'poses no danger to them, for they are using a new method of electrical installation called bare hand live line technique. This technique enables new power lines to be installed without a break in electrical service to customers. Free Press Photo PUC uses new method Grabbing hold of a 44,000 volt electric power line with one's hands usually means certain death, but through a new technique, public utilities staff can do exactly that without any risk. The new method, known as "bare hand live Une technique," was employed by the staff of the Whitby Public Utilities Commission July 25 when they installed a new electric Une to DuPont of Canada. Ev Cole, training super- visor for the Electrical Utilities Safety Association of Ontario, was on hand for the job and used it as a training exercise for the Whitby PUC. The advantage of the bar hand live line technique is that new lines can be attached to existing live power Unes without any interruption of service to residential, industrial or commercial power users, said Mr. Cole. The work is performed safely from a special insulated and grounded aerial truck which the PUC put into service iç July. The name "bare hand tech- nique," is almost true, for 'the men actually handle the live wires, but are wearing gloves. "When performing this technique the workmen bond themselves to the live 44,000 volt wires," said Mr. Cole. In setting up the bar hand live wire technique for the DuPont job, Mr. Cole worked with Dave McKeag, line superintendent for the Whitby PUC, who arranges training programs yearly with the Electrical Utilities Safety Association of Ontario to continually update the Whitby employees with the latest technological advances and techniaues.
