Three days'of good weather and excellent competition made this the best County Town Tourna- ment ever. Compýetitors from Picker- ing, Ajax, Oshawa, Bowman- ville and, Whitby were entered in the five events - Mixed1 Doubles, Ladies Doubles, Men's Doubles, ladies Singles and Men's Singles. The competitive level of tennis in Whlitby bas increased to such a degree that the local club had finalists in every event. This has neyer happened before. In' two of the e;vents - Mixed Doubles and Ladies Singles - it was an all-Whitby final. Some changes were made in this year's draw by tournament co-chairmen Steve Thwaites and Ralph McKendry that limited players to only two events. The results of thîs were more competitors and better scheduling. It is hoped in the future this tournarnent will be held at the proposed Iroquois Park tennis facility. Free Press Photo LA> THEODORE BLIGHT Theodore Blight, a former printer with the Mundy Goodfellow Printing Company in Oshawa and Whitby, died at the Oshawa General Hospital Aug. 9 at the age of 75, following a lengthy illness. He lived at 620B Apt. 11, Bond Street East, Oshawa. Mr. Bligbt was born at Myrtle, March 31, 1903, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Blight. He was married Feb. 3, 1923 in Whitby and lived in the Oshawa-Whitby area ahl his life. He is survived by bis wife, the former Vera Maie Conboy; two sons, Bud of' Scarborough and Don of Oshawa; seven grand- children and two great« grandchildren. He was pre- deceased by a daugbter Helen. The funeral was beld at the Armstrong Funeral Home, Oshawa,. Aug. 11, REv. Merrill Ferguson officiating. Interment followed in Mount Lawn Cemetery. JAMES CONNOR A native of Whitby and a lifelong resident -0 f the town,. James (Jim) Connor, 850 Green Street, died at the Dr. J.O. Ruddy Hospital Aug. 7 at the age of 76. A son of the late John and Lydia Connor,' Mr.- Connor ws boru in Whitby,,Aug. 13, 1901. He worked for'10 years -as a' nursing orderly at tbe Oshawa General Hospital,, before retiring nine years He was a member of AIl Saints' Anglican Church. Mr. Connor is survived by his wife, the former Lil Copeland, whom be married in 1938 at Hamilton. He is also survived by four sisters and one brother, ahl of Whitby: Mrs. Kate Luke, Mrs. Mae Bragg, Mrs. Ann Clark, Miss Helen Connor and William Connor. He was predeceased by two brothers, John and Dennis. The funeral was held Aug. 13 at W.C. Town Funeral Chapel, conducted by Rev. J.A. Roney. Interment followed In Groveside Cemetery, Brooklin. EIKNEST PELLOW A native of Wbitby, who lived in Montreal for many yeats, Ernest James Pellow, died Aug. il at Fairview ,Lodge at the age of 85. A son of the late James and Sarah Pellow, be was born at Wbitby, Sept. 22, 1892, and attended public and hligh schools in Whitby. Mr. Pellow was very active in managing junior hockey while residing in Montreal. He was a real estate auditor for Canadian national Railways for 35 years and had retired '20 years ago. Mr. Pellow was an elder at St. Mark's United Church and a member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 112, Whitby. He is survived by bis wife, tbe former Gladys .Kidd, whom he married at Toronto, Sept. 7, 1921, one son, James of Montreal; ond daugbter, Mrs. Joan Coulter of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
