Alvin» Sturgess, who organized the reunion, -said he was very pleased that 143 f ormer students who attended the sehool before 1935, came to the reunion. 0f these, 86 came in the after- noon and the remainder in the evening. The oidest former Model School students to attend the reunion were Mrs. Laura Casseils, 97, and her sister, Miss Edith Barnes, 95, both of whom are tif elong residents of Whitby. Also attending the reunion were Miss Birdie Wilson, 93, and her brother, Donald- Wilson, 87, Who spoke to the gathering about his days at the school. Harry Jermyn, a former principal of the sehool when it was known as Dundas Street School, gave a speech on the development of educa- tion, from the log- school bouse to today's modemn brick and glass buildings. Another former prin cipal, Florence Heard, for whom the school was renamed in 1974,. also attended the reunion, along with former teacher Louise Mclntosh. Each of these visitors was presented with a yellow rose, representing friendship, and their association with the school.. Although most of those attendinig the reunfion were Whitby residents, one former, student 'came from London, Ontario,. and another from Ironbridge, near Sault Ste. Marie. Mayor Jim Gartshore attendeçi in the evening to bring greetings from the Town of Whitby. The reunion was a time for reminiscing and fellowship, and continued late into the evening, with a Îood time h ad by ail. Meals on Wheels needs more volunteers, Meals on Wheels, a com- munity project set up by the ladies of St. Mark's United and Ail Saints' Anglican Churches, begin th eir fal program of providing meals for shut-ins today. Meals are prepared in the kitchen at St. Mark's Church and delivered each Wednes- day at noon. Voluntêçrs.' are needed, and anyorte interested may cali Carole Murkar at 668-3057.
