The committee noted that it was flot in a position to give direction to the building inspector on this matter. Mr. Burgess informed the operations committee that an $8,000 federal grant to renovate the building had been lost by the humane society as a result of the delay, and six students lost summer jobs. He also said that the- legal opinion given to him by the town solicitor was different from that purported to be in the- report of the operations comm ittee. Mr. Hughes commented that the town had approved the land for the humane society shelter and the relocation of the Camp X building there, but now it was preventing the humane society from finishing the job it had set out to do. Mr. Hughes said the humane society's clinic would flot be in direct competition with private veterinary clinics, when questioned by Councillors Bob Attersley and Bob Carson. 'By law we are perfectly entitled to provîde thîs service" he said. "You might stop us in this but y'ou won't stop us in other areas. You tell us to control animals. Why not do some- thing about it (spaving, and fleutering)? We are being blocked everywhere we go." Councillor Attersley replied that he was bothèred that. public money raised through taxes would be depriving free enterprise if the huma ne society clinic was established. Mr. Hughes- said he believed pressure was beîng excrted by local veterinar- ians to stop the town from approving the clinic, "It is very unusual, very odd treat- ment we have here." he said.
