Whitby Downtown By John'Roberts Some space must be taken to discuss oneC of our ld whipping boys: parking. My views are somewhat different from a great number of opinions which I have heard on this topic, and I'd certainly be interested in having some reaction on what follows. I believe that there is adequate parking in downtown Whitby. 0f course, there are the meters along Brock and Dundas which provide a few spaces. But so many people seem to forget or ignore the fact that we have perfectly ad quate parking lots at Coîborne and Bryon Streets, and at Dundas and Green. And both are within two blocks of the downtown shopping area, the one beside the Legion being less than a block away. And we mustn't also forget that there are a few spots behind the fire ~!: apers Hope al of you enjoyed your weekend. There seems to belittie difference between these lots and any parking facilities at major shopping centres, witb rthe exception of the number of parking spces availabie and "the cost. I've often had more trouble'finding a parking spot at a shopping centre that I've had in, downtown Whitby, and Ive more often than not had to w'alk farther from the car at a centre to where I've shopped than I have downtown. As well,, even on the busiest of days, I've neyer seen. either the Coiborne or Byron Streets lots, fuit. But let's look at the other side of the coin. There bas to be a reason for this ongoing complaint that parking in downtown Whitby is inadequate. There would tikely be more main street parking availabie if some business people'and residents of apartments above downtown stores, didn't use on-street parking for their own purposes. This is something that the downtown merchants associations are attempting to rectify, but admittedly it is only a smalt part of the question. I also think that the very nature of the downtown area, being an.outdoor shopping area with a limfted store mix, means that the shopper usuaily tikes to park as close to the paricular store that he or she is patronizing as possible. for Whitby. Many indicated that I shoutd have expanded the reasons for not wanting a bus service. The most current reason would be the result 0f the iack of service now in Toronto, due to a strike. This is a costty and inconvenient situation and one Whitby residents can do without. Keep the cails coming. So far no one bas called to tell me they need the service. Remember Friday October 20 wiii be the next Corridor Capers Dance at Heydenshore Pavilion. See you next week. M. I 1 FREE PREss, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1978, PAGE 5 That's fair gaine. Most of us likely want to do this, but at the mails we can park at one end of the plaza from where we are going, yet walk indoors to the store of our choice and window shop at the same time, with a wide variety of shops to hoid our interest and a controlled environinent to make our exodus comfortabie.- Primariiy, though, traffic congestion on Brock and Dundas is one of the major deterrents to parking downtown. It is very difficuit to make a left hand turn in places, and proceeding across either Brock or Dundas is neariy impossible at times. This fact atone often makes parking within the downtown core impracticie. Ait of these points add up to two conclusions; that there is adequate parking downtown, and yet there isn't. However, we must realize that the basic nature of the downtown is not going to change, and that there is oniy 50 much parking space available. For the immediate future, that can't be altered. The onty alternative is to put a parking lot into someplace' presently occupied by something else, such as a home, as is presently being done at Coiborne and Green Streets, Personaliy, I'd rather watk a couple of block than have this happen.
