Ddsn -WhteT's -, H istorical SWhiiltby, FRED T. ROWE One of Whitby's Most active poitical figures for a period of more than 30 years was Frederick Tho mas Rowe. Mr. Rowe was born in 1874 at Almonds, a settlement around an ohd church on Highway 2 at the west end of Whitby. His father was James Rowe, a pioneer settler from Devonshire, England. Police saîd fhey believe the machine, valued at $1,550, was loaded info the back of a truck at night. OOKUN with the James'Rowe whio was the first mayor of Whitby, and came fromn Queen's County, Ireland. Mr. Rowe started in life as a farrner in Whitby Township, and in the 1920s, moved into the Town of Whitby, where he went into the real estate and insurance business with Ed Bowman, who was to be a close associate in politics as well as business. Mr. Rowe began hîs career in municipal politics by serving as a Whitby Township councillor from 1912 to 1914. From 1915 to 1918 and in 1926 he was Reeve of the Township, and continued as a côuncillor from«1919 to 1925, with the exception of one year. After moving into the Town of Whitby, Mr. Rowe was elected to the town council. He served as councillor in 1930-31, Deputy Reeve from 1932 to 1935, Reeve from 1936 to 1937 and- Mayor from 1938 to 1944. In 1935 Mr. Rowe was elected by his fellow councillors as 1Warden of Ontario County, the first Deputy Reeve ever to be awarded that important position since the county was founded. SEPTEMBER 13, 1978, PAGE 7- Folhowing his retiremnent from, council at the end of 1£44, Mr. Rowe was ehected to the Whîtby Public Utilities Commission, and served as its chairman and vice-chairman. He was chairman at the time the new public utilities office was built in 1948-49 and participated in the sod turning, ceremony. Mr. Rowe retired from the PUC in 1950, ending a long and distinguished career of public service. Fred Rowe.was very much involved with the United Church, serving at one time as Sunday Sehool Superintendent at Almonds, and as an eider of the Whitby United Church (now St. Mark's) f 'or 25 years. He wa one of the special honorary elders at the laying of the corner stone for the United Church Hall in 1955. Mr. Rowe was a member of the Whitby Rotary Club for several years, and at the time of his death was an honorary member. A prominent Mason, he was Master of Composite Lodge and Principal of the Keystone Chapter, Royal ARch Masons, in Whitby. Mr. Rowe lived a long life, dying at the age of 85,,on Dec., 21, 1959. Municipal political service seemed to run in Mr. Rowe's family, for one of his brothers, 'William Henry Rowe, was a member of the city councîl 0f Big Rapids, Michigan, and wa,& secreta ry of the school board. Like his brother, he was à ' Rotarian and a Mason. Three of the men f the Rowe famihy went t' the United' States to seek their fortune, all settling in the state of' Michigan. Fred Rowe's son, Vernon Rowe, lives in Whitby today,a nd holds the record of more than 40 years of perfect attendance at the town's Rotary Club.
