E WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 4,1 978, PAGE 9 United Way announces recipients of this year's allocations Boyd Chesney, General Ca mpaign Chairman, for the 1978 Oshawa-Whitby United Way Campaign, has announced the names of this year's volunteers who have taken charge of the various campaign committees. The target for this year's campaign, which starts October 2, is $1,104,Q90., an increase of about 5' over the 1977 achievement. Money raised in this year's campaign will be used to help 29 agencies. One- new agency, Information Oshawa, has been added and grants have been approved for four organizations which are not member agencies. Helping to head up this year's team are Joe Pegg, Assistant Campaign- Chair- man, and Frank Taylor, Executive Director of the Oshawa-Whitby United Way. The importance of the Education Sector is emphasized this year with the estblishment of an Education Group. In previous years, people in the education field were included in the Public Service Group. Student activities now are included in the Education Group. The following tentative allocations to agencies have been approved by the Oshawa-Whitby United Way Board of Directors: Ajax/Pickering & Whitby Association for retarded children, $1,000.; The Arthritis Society, $12,000.; Big Brothers Association of Oshawa & District, $28,000.; Boy Scouts - Ohawa District Council $50,000.; Whitby District Council, $3,500.; Boys' & Girls' Club (East- view), $86,500.; Canadian National Institute for the Blind, $30,000.; Canadian Red Cross Society - Oshawa, $70.000.; Whitby, $21,000.; Crippled Children's School & Treatment Centre, $11,500.; The Distress Centre of Durham REgion, $11,500.; Durham Region Family Y.M.C.A., $43.000. ;Girl Lynde Shores Conservation Area improved Several improvements have been made to Whitby's two conservation areas by the Central Lake Ontario Conservaion Authority this sumrrter. At \4le Lynde Shores Conservation Area a new 40-car parking lot, picnic area and canoe launching ramp were constructed. A picnic shelter was constructed at the Hieler Down Conservation Area, and a number of road and trail improvements were made.
