He hoped there could be some way found to solve the prob- lem. The Council had received a hand-delivered -letter -from, the WhitbY Senior Citizens ActivitY Centre Oct. 10. The letter,-read by Mayor. Jim Gartshore, requested tiiat if, possible the matter of Public Transportation for the Town of Whitby 'be put on a plebiscite.' Mayor Gartshore asked Town Clerk William Wallace if it was possible to have the question of public transpor- tation for the. Town be put before the people durmng the coming municipal elections. Mr. Wallace pointed out that he did flot think it would be possible, as 'the time element does not legally permit' such a question or any other question coming to Council be placed on the ballots for the people* to indicate their wishes. He pointed out that there should be more than six weeks' time between the request and the date of the election. There are a number of technicalities that have to be observed and there is the printmng of the ballots, he said. The letter from the Senior Citizens Transportation Coznmittee was referred to the Staff'with. the request that a report be made to the Operations Committee as Wo what could-be done. The matter of Transpor- tation again reared its head when'Councillor Gerry Emm brought forth a letter near the conclusion of the Council meeting. .He. pointed out that Pickering charges a bus fare df 40 cents for children under 12 years of age and 50 cents for children 12ý years and over and aduits. The Senior Citizens of Pickering receive 'ride frees'. The Town of Pickering 'Expects to raise at least haif The Town of Pickering 'expects to raise at least haif of the operating cost of the bus servaice from the fares charged on the DiaI-A-Bus system and the other haif will be paid for by grants from the Provincial Govern- ment and Municipal grants.' The cost of having a bus service in Pickering was quoted at $9.85 per capita, Counicillor Edwards said. He requested that the matter be put. before the Opeirations Comrnittee with the suggestion thàt 'lwe can provide a 'service that can be made available to the people of this Town when Pickering can do 1Uit.iTe Councfi gave unanîmous approval to having- the, Operations Committee prepare a report on the Dial-A-Bus service. Gouncillor Joy Thompson was absent from this council meeting.
