In an effort< to put their association- on the right track, the people involved have, instigat ed a major- Christmas promotion, in which.over 40 merchants at time of writing will be taking part. This promotion will be run from December 2-24. The physical characteristies of. this promotion are impor- tant, but not as much so "as the factý that m erchants who have previously not.taken part in downtown promotions are joining in. This is significant. The major stumbling block to co-ordinated effort in the past hias been a lack of support,, in the fîrst case, and secondly a mistaken opinion of the geographical boundaries of downtown Whitby., While It' might appear that, the 'downtown' is the immediate area surrounding the four corners for a block in ail directions, this' in fact 'is not so. The association is stressing that 'downtown' means all of that area within the redevelopment area, and dûes indeed spread out to the shopping plazas.ý What has been happening is that the merchants have been attempting to break down this psychological barrier at certain geographical locations, such as that which seems to say that the downtown stops, for instance, at Coîborne Street along Brock Street South. There's no reason to think this way. We in theassociation feel that the people in the Safeway Plaza, as an exemple, are just as much a part of the downtown as we in the core are, and I think that ail are concerned that these merchants are participating and aiding us in this attempt to make the shopping area as ail encompassing aspossible. We algo apprecilate the fact that merchants who were previously41not involved are in fact doing theiy best to help. They have had a valid point in the past - that attempts to unite the merchants have not worked, and that-after awhile there is very littie hope in getting things moving. But there is now an undercurrent of progress here, and I think that'the end result will be a strong show of solidarity in the, downtown area by al concerned. You are goîi to see a number of progressive changes. Merchants are soon to be adopting extended opening hours. Some who were previously not open on Friday nights now will not lock up at 6, and this will not merely apply to the Christmas season. A few merchants are even going to remain open on Thursday nights in the near future. This is progress. The Board of Management held their first meeting last week, and progress was somewhat slower. The Board decided to have representatives from two local newspapers, two radio stations and the cable television station make presentations on November 22 concerning promoting the redevelopment area. Lihrary presents cuoking films On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons in November, the Whitby Public Library will be showing a series of films entitled 'The Art of Cooking' at 2 p.m., in the Library Auditorium. Starting off the program on November 7 and 9 will be 'Gastronomie', a film focus- ing on Quebe's art and science of good eating, and 'The Art of French Cooking', fîve famous recipes usÎng simple ingredients and tools. November 14 and 16 will be 'Cooking of Germany', hearty robust cookery pre- pared' in the German tradi- tion and Pennsylvania Country cooking' where you will be introduced to scrapple, funnel cake and sh«ooy pie. November 21 and 23 wilI feature 'CookIng of Italy' a variety of basic dishes and 'Cooking of Scandinavia', recipes which range from flaky pastries to bountiful smorgasbords. November 28and 30 will be 'L.,atin Aînerican Cooking', a reminder of the many foods which originated with the fftdians of Latin America, and 'New England Cooking', a rev'iew of recipes fromn early foloniai kitchens. The aim of the Board durufig its first year Is to promote the redevelopment area as a good place to do business. This is not restricted to commercial enterprises only, but also includes professional establish- ments-. As well, the Board will be promoting places such as the library and the Gallery, in -order to make people more aware of what cultural and recreational facilities are available to them in the redevQlopment- area. It can be safely assumed that things are beginning to take shape in the, downtown area. Not only, are promotions taking shape, but there are a few nèw businesses opening up which have already- achieved very solid reputations, and their presence is going to go a long way towards improving the general atmosphere of the'redevelopment area.
