COMRA may not patrol The City of Oshawa Marine Rescue Association (COMRA) may stop patrol- ling Whitby waters unless the Whitby Town Council starts paying part of its operation costs. Alderman Alan Dewar of Oshawa made this statement last week as the Oshawa Fire Protection and General Pur- pose Committee, of which he is chairman, decided to ask Whitby . to reconsider a recent motion by its council not to help pay for the rescue boat Oshawa and Newcastle pay for COMRA, which is manned by volunteers. The boat patrols waters adjoin. ing the shores of Newcastle. Oshawa and Whitby. COMRA Commander Bob Henstock reported to Alder- man Dewar's committee that in 1977-78 COMRA answered i distress calls associated with Whitby waters. He also pointed out that the COMRA boat, based in Oshawa harbor, makes regu- lar weekly patrols in the Whitby area. 'It is very.evident that the parties concerned with the decision (not to pay for COMRA's costs) are not completely aware of the Volunteers needed Durham Centre for the Developmentally Handi- capped, located south of the Dr. J.O. Ruddy Hospital, is greatly in need of volunteers for the many programs offered by the staff. Volunteers can be usefuil both in the Children's Unit and the Adult Unit. Five fire calls in two days Whitby fire fighters had a busy two days Friday and Saturday, responding to five calîs. On Friday at 11:32 a.m. fire fighters extinguished a kitchen fire in the home of Ann VanStavern on Durham Road 23 (Whitby-Ajax Town Line), south of -Highway 2. Damage amounted to $500. The fire department reports the cause was a stove burner turned on wrongly. Saturday at 7:06 a.m., fire fighters were called out to 15 Michael Boulevard to rescue a man trapped in a car following an accident. The accident is under investiga- tion. At 8:13 a.m. there was a car fire at Euclid and Dundas Streets, resulting in $600 damage. A fire depart- ment spokesman, said the fire in a car owned by H.J. Platt, 308 Euclid Street, was caused by power steering fluid spread on the manifold. Saturday at 11:12 a.m. a fire caused $5,500 damage to a bedroom in the apartment of Walter Porter at 123 Kent Street, Apt. 4. Mr. Porter was taken to the Dr. J.O. Ruddy General Hospital, suffering from smoke inhal- ation, and was released four hours later. The fire and smoke damage was confined to the bedroom. The fire department reports the cause in under investigation. At 5:30 p.m. another bed- room fire occurred at 413 Byron Street South. Damage was $1,500 and confined to the bed. The owner of the home is Ivor Lawrence. The tire departrnent reports that this fire is also under investi- gation. Mr. Henstock says he has been to Whitby council at least three times asking for financial assistance, and said that if COMRA is expected to go into Whitby waters the town should either pay or get its own boat. Staff may have grand and glorious ideas about how your money is to be spent, but it is our councillors who will make the final decision.
