Corridor Capers The U.C.W. Ladies of Westminster United Church deserve an extra pat on the back. Saturday's Bazaar was exceptionally well planned. The noon luncheon was not only successful but delicious as well. The variety of items displayed for sale was also remarkable. Great work ladies and.nice to see so many friends and neighbours again. CORRIDOR AREA RATEPAYERS ASSOCIATION Annual Meeting and Election of Officers Thursday, November 23 at 7:30 p.m. Dr.. Robert Thornton School. Plan to attend...... SEWERS FOR THE CORRIDOR Tuesday of this week, the Regional Works department committee will be discussing SEWER RATES for the entire Region. The staff's suggestion will be to equalize all areas within Durham Region with a uniform rate of approximately $750.000 per household. The CORRTDOR A A. in Whithy will be included in the uniform rate. The already serviced areas in the Corridor have paid approximately $150.00 for each hook-up, as agreed upon when amalgamation took place. It hardly seems fair that the people whio have patiently waited for sewers, should be penalized because of construction delays. Attend the meeting at Dr. Robert Thornton School this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. so we may all find out how. the new rate will affect the unserviced areas. Our Regional Councillors will be asked to attend the Annual Meeting of the Ratepayers Association to explain the new ,Regional Policy and uniform rate for sewer services. MEMBERSHIP DUES This year the annual membership dues for the Ratepayers Association will be collected by the Whitby Rangers. The girls have been working very hard to earn sufficient funds to help finance a March trip to Switzerland. The Rangers will go door-to-door in the. Corridor area canvassing each household. Your yearly membership is $2.00 per family. A portion of the $2.00 will be donated to the Whitby Rangers to help with their current project. They have already delivered gas bills, and bake sales, rummage sales etc., in short, a very active and enthusiastic group. Your membership to the ratepayers association will help the girls reach their ultimate goal. Best of luck to the Whitby Rangers. Christmas Seal campaign begins One stormy December night in 1903 a postman named Einar Holboell was working late in a post office on the outskirts of Copen- hagen, Denmark. He was sorting great piles of Christmas mail. As he moved around the mailbags he paused to look out of the window, and caught sight of two ragged little waifs, a boy and a girl, before they disappeared into the swirling snow. Einar Holboell went back, to the stacks of letters and parcels with a sad heart. The contrast between the expressions of good will slip- ping through his fingers and the forsaken looking children troubled him. Suddenly, he had an idea. Suppose that every letter or parcel carried an ,extra.stamn.,and- the money from these tens ot thousands of stamps went to help unfortunate children, many crippled by bone tuberculosis and tuberculo- sis of the spine. From these beginnings sprang our now famihiar Christmas Seal Campaign, which in 1907 crossed the Atlantic to become firmly entrenched in the hearts and minds of North Americans. Although tuberculosis is no longer the terrible scourge it was in 1903, Christmas Seals remain part of our Christ- mas tradition. The money raised by local Lung Associations goes to support research into improved detection and treatment methods, and to local community programs which help victims of respir- atory disease. This year, Durham Region Lung Association has run Family Asthma Programs, Better Breating Courses for emphysema and chronic bronchitis patients, Day Camp for Asthmatic Child- ren, Smoking Withdrawal Clinics, Baby Sitter Training Courses and a Medical Seminar., The Association gives limited financial assistance to needy respira tory patients in the purchase of drugs and medical equipment, and provides an extensive educational resource to the public and members of the medical and teaching pro- fessions. More details next week. WHITBY JAYCEES The Whitby Jaycees will again be organizing a Santa Claus Parade for the citizens of Whitby and surrounding area. This year the goal is set for a bigger and better parade than in previous years. We all look forward to Saturday December 2, the day of the Whitby Jaycees Santa Claus Parade. BIRTHDAY SPLASH PARTIES The Parks and Recreation Department of the Town of Whitby, as a Christmas special for the months of November and December, will be allowing those children who are having birthday parties, free admission to Iroquois Park Indoor Swimming Pool.
