Hutchison Public School have fornMed a harmonica band u'nder the direction of their teacher and principal, Carmen Sarles. Twenty-eight of the pupils mee t for a regular practice each Wednesday'at noon. The pupils use top-quality Horner harmonicas which they purchased themselves, and the band is augmented by a drummer, Sammy Dodd, a grade 6 pupil who also plays a harmonica in the band. Sammy has been assisted in his efforts with the drums by his instructor Doug Swain, who operates a music store in downtown Whitby. The pupils have a reper- toire of several numbers and expect to play a t a number of functions during the school year. Some of the numbers include: Kumkýaya, Jingle or anLJy Coin Belîs, Rudolph thé Red Nosed Reindeer and Red River Valley. Each member of the band has a sheet of music with the, words of the song corres- ponding with numbers of the holes on the -harmonica. Plans are already being made for a Christmas concert bv the harmonica ceert offers 1 band at St. Andrew's Presby- terian Church, and at Fair- view Lodge. The band is open for any other offers, says Mr. Sarles. A. harmonica band ýhas been a regular feature of the music program at R.A. Hutchison School for the past six years. The band is strictly voluntary. Mr. Sarles started the band himself, and has had 40 years of experience in play- ing the harmonica.
