PAGE 12, WEDNESDAY,JANUARY 17,1979, WHITBY FREE PRESS Three types of transportation are discussed at budget talks iDuring tne prelîminary budget discussion last week there was a brief time spent on the thorny problem of public transportation. There were three modes of transportation placed before the Finance Committee: subsidized taxi service for the senior citizens and handi- capped, a handi-transit system and a. public trans- portation system to service the area. Mayor Jim Gartshore commented that an improvednbus service for the area of the town south of Rossland Road could possi- bly add $20 to $25 "to a taxable unit." But if all three forms of public transporta- DURHAM tion were considered for the town it "would explode the budget." As there are many aspects to be considered in the forg- ing ahead for an improved public trasportation system for the Town Mayor Gartshore requested the Staff to obtain more facts and have the information placed on paper. The Committee could ýnot discuss the budget with any sense or in depth without the informationbefore it. The members were discussing various matters dealing with the transporta- tion "off the cuff" so to speak. One of the facts to be. looked into was- whether Charterways have a fanchise to operate their timited bus service in' the Town of Whitby? Another was how can the Town Council go about having an improved bus service for the Town? Mayor Gartshore pointed out that discussions are underway and in a week or s0 a decision is going to be madedwhether Go* Transit will take over Charterway's route or whether Charter- ways will haul passengers to Pickering. "It is stupid that buses now go by people and they have to wait half an hour for another company. -For once in our lives we are going to moveon thetransit problem," Mayor Gartshore said. "There is a demand for more integrated service here and we are putting pressure on for improved service. Something is going to happen in the next little while. There are 30,000 people out there who are getting a little over- taxed. There are three types of transit before us and we can't put one in without doing something for the other. The Province at the time it was constructing Highway 401 promised Pickering Township and Whitby Town- ship Councils that an interchange would be con- structed in this area in due time. The Regional Road 23, Whitby-Pickering Town Line, road is almost a direct straight-line connection from the Baseline Road, (Victoria Street) to Lake. Simcoe. When it is comple- tely constructed it is a direct connection to the Summer cottages and summer resort areas of the Region. During the operations Committee of Council meeting Mayor Jim Gartshore said, "there is no damned overpass for the railway and nobody uses it because it goes nowhere." The road is partially con- structed as a four lane arter- ial road at the present time. Ail that it needs now is the development *of the 401 interchange. Councillor Emm pointed out that the Canadian Pacific Railway Company won approval from the Federal Government last year to update and construct a wider and safer overpass of the railway. This would end "once and for all" the detour south of the Taunton Road. It was pointed out to the Operations Committee by the Town Public Works Director Dick .Kuwahara that the Provincial Government at the present timehas decided therec"isn't enough of a demand for an interchange at Regional RâIad 23" (Whitby-Pickering Town Line) and that there are other "high priority areas.
