With provincial parti- cipation in the project, rents will be reduced initially by about $58 per 'unit below market level. The project involves the construction of 90 "town- houses rangi 'ng in size from two to four bedrooms on a 2.7 hectare site at the corner of Manning Road and Anderson Street. Fifteen of the units are eligible for the province s Rent Supplement Program which will resuit in additio- nal provincial aid, estimated at more than $10,000 annu-, ally during the first years of' occupation. Under the Rent Supple- ment Program, tenants' rents are based on income. The difference9' between the a.moýint they pay and the actual' rent is made up by Whitby (7.5 per cent), the province (42.5 per cent) and the federal government (50 per cent). Free Press Photo Pro bation for kicrosse gfame assault A 16-year-old Whitby. lacrosse player who was convicted of assualting an Oshawa player after a gamne Sept. 7, was given a suspen- ded sentence and a talk ýon sportsrnanship in provincial court Thursday. Brian J.- Sullivan will be on probation for three years, following his'conviction for assaulting Oshawa player Rick Ca tulli, 15, afte r a game at, the Oshawa- Children's Arena. The court was told that Catulli and a Whitby player were fighting when Sullivan, who was not dressed, in uniform for the game, jumped from the bench and punched Catulli in -the face. Catulli spent eight days in hospital with cuts, a badly swollen nose, swollen left side of his face, and bleeding behind the left eye. Sullivan had been suspen- ded from his team at the time of the incident, fol- lowing a fight earlier in the series. Judge John Bark commented that young players should be in sports te learn how to play games in a sports-niinded manner, and not act as, "policemen" for their teams. The object of sports is not to teach young people to become bullies, hie said. Carnival le set for Feb. 22 -25 Plans are under way for Whitby's annual winter carn- ival, to be held at Iroquois Park Feb. 22 to 25. This year the Whitby Jaycees are assisting the town's recreation depart- ment in setting up the carnival. Previously the town had handled the project alone. The Jaycees are consider- ing adding skiing, snowshoe- ing, snowmobiling, and log sawing to the hockey, skating, broombail and choosing of the carnival queen, which have occurred in past years. There may even be a pancake breakfast, and snow sculpting contest, if the weatherman co- opera tes.
