The President of the Vol- unteer Association, Mrs. Erika Dovey presented Her Honour-with an Honourary membership to the Associa- tion and thanked the Lieute- nant-Governor for her keen interest in the work done by volunteers and many others, who are involved in the, field of Mental Health. Also present were: The Honourable Norm Cafik, Minister of State, Multicul- turalism; Mr. George Ashe, Member of the Provincial Parliament for the riding of Durham West; 'William Jappy, Executive Director, Psychiatric Services Branch, Ministry of Health; His Worship Jim Potticary, Mayor of Oshawa; His Worship Jim Gartshore, Mayor of Whitby; Councillor Joe Drumm, Whitby Coun- cil; Councillor Bill MeLean (acting representative for Mayor Masson of Ajax); Councillor Val Marshall; Councillor Henry Westney all of the Ajax Council; Councillor Doug Dickerson, Regional Council, Town of Pickering; John Roberts, President, Whitby Chamber of Commerce; Mrs. Barbara Jamieson, .Chairman of Scarborough Mental Health Council and party. Proceeds from the Snow- flake Ball will be used to assist with various volunteer projects at the hospital, including Birthday parties, teas, Christmas, and special event programming, baby- sitting service for volunteers and community outings. Ontario's Lieutenant- Governor Pauline McGibbon. Since Her Honor had agreed to be patron of the hospitals Volunteer Asso- ciation dance Feb. 24, the volunteers and Hospital Administrator Michael O'Keefe invited her to take a brief tour of the hospital facilities. This was Mrs. McGibbon's first visit to a psychiatrie hospital since she became Lieutenant-Governor in 1974. Mrs. McGibbon, accom- panied by her aide-de-camp, Lt. Col. Michael Koster, Commanding Officer of the Ontario Regiment, arrived at the hospital at 2 p.m. She was greeted by Mr. O'Keefe and Erika Dovey, president of the volunteer association. Candy Stripers Ian Buchanan of Whitby and Cindy Scarlett of Oshawa presented Her Honor with flowers, and in thanking Her Honoi for her visit, Mr. O'Keefe presented her with a framed color aerial photo- graoh of the hospital. During her tour of the hospital Mrs. McGibbon visi- ted Scarborough A an active treatment unit, where she was welcomed by Chief Psychiatrist Dr. Caradid Cruz and Head Nurse Ruth Adamcewicz. Here she met staff and patients on the ward and viewed a number of pro- grarns which were taking place at the time of her visit. Mrs. McGibbon saw a recreational craft program in progress under the direc- tion of Recreation Instructor Nancy Fairman-Kiley. One of the patients in the group presented the Lieutenant- Governor. with a macrame brooch specially made for her. Mrs. McGibbon talked with treatment team workers, nursing and medi- cal staff, psychiatrists, oc- cupational therapists, and cleaning staff working on the unit. Next, the Lieutenant- Governor visited Medical Geriatric Unit D, where she was greeted by the singing of the Oshawa Senior Citizens Choir, and --welcomed by Director of Nursing Pat Kruspe. Dr. Peter Chang, Co-or- dinator of the unit, intro- duced her to be medical unit staff and patients and ex- plained the programs avail- able on the unit. The hour and-a-half tour concluded with a reception in the hospital cafeteria, where the Lieutenant-Governor met more than 400 Whitby Psychiatrie Hospital staff from every departnent. She had a personal word of eincouragement for every staff member she met. Her interest in the work of the staff and the volunteers was a great source of encou- ragement to all who are associated with the hospital, and her visit was viewed as very successful. One staff member pointed out that when a public figure such as the Lieutenant-Governor recognizes the work that is being done for the mentally ill, her interest gives hope for the future of all those who are sick or work with the mentally il.
