Town had no complaints say At a recent regular meet- ing of the Whitby Town Council the problem facing the Garden Street residents living in the new townhouses was brought up by Councillor Bob Attersley. He, pointed out that Oshawa City Council is going to try and get the Members of Parliament and the Members of the Provincial Parliament involved in order to have better construction standards for new homes. The developers are build- ing homes and not paying any attention as to how those homes are being constructed by the contractors, he said. He asked Mayor Jim Gart- shore if any of the residents living in the Garden Street homes where there is allegedly very poor cons- truction work done that is now resulting in costly, re- pairs to the home buyers, had spoken to Mayor Gart- shore or the Town Clerk Bill Wallace. "We never had a request frorm the people in that area or any other area asking us to look into the possible poor qonstruction of homes in the new developments," Mayor Gartshore replied. He had studied the notes and reports from the town inspectors and read -the reports in the paper. But "we never had any requests or complaints from the owners themselves." He didn't "know of any legal way the Council could step in and take action as~the residents having the pro- blems have not come to coun- cil with theproblems." Mayor Gartshore did say he "has attempted to contact the builder and have him deal with the problems." Councillor Attersley told the Council that he knows of three families who have moved out of the Garden Street townhouses. He found it difficult to believe that people have to go to the media with their problems. He then stated again in a questioning voice, "the people have not come to the Council or the Town." The members of Council COU NTY BOWL SUMMER LIAGUE MAY & JUNE - 10 weeks only on Wednesday or Tuesday evenings Starting Time 7:30 p.m. For Registration or Further Information Coll: 668-2651 County Bowl 118 Byron St., N. "St. John Ambulance is authorized by theWork- men's Compensation Board, Ontario, to provide First Aid training for business and industry throughout the province,!' said Peter Etmanskie, chairman of the training committee. "We are offering our assistance in training employees to meet the First Aid regulations of the Workmen's Compen- sation Act." The number of trained first aiders required varies with the number of employ- ees, the number of shifts, and the number of first aid stations established for employees to use in an emergency. It is usual to have two employees trained per shift for each, first aid station, said Mr. Etmanskie. The Workmen's Compen- sation Board pays the course fee for this training, and classes will be held at suit- able times during the day or in the evenings. Employees will receive a safety-oriented first aid course, recognized by the Workmen's Comnensation Board, the Council of Safety Association and industry throughout Ontario as an important component in accident prevention. On successful completion, employees will receive a St. John certificate and a pocket card. FROMENT 108 Athol St. 668-1666(1665) rs mayor had approached the Mayor or the Council with their problems. "We would be delighted to help if there is a legal way of doing so; but the people have not complained directly to council or the Town." As there is no record of tŠe complaints about poor cons- truction of homes by deve- lopers there is no legal way the Council can deal "with a real but non existing pro- blem"-non existing because the problem to be deait with is not on the Town books or placed before Council in an official manner. Mayor Gartshore pointed out that on the receipt of the building inspector's reports and other complaints received by the town staff and Mayor and Council there have been "six or seven major home construction jobs in ail areas of the town stopped because they haven't met with the building standards."
