A flea market wil be held May 12 from il a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch will be available in the lounge at a nominal cost, for this annual event. The May bus trip will be to Niagara Falls. Forty-six seats are available at $7 per person. A stop will be made at Queenston for a picnic lunch, and supper will be at St. Catherines. rtre plans Registrations will be taken May 14 from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the centre. The bus leaves May 23 from the centre at 9:30 a.m. Lawn' bowling will begin for the 1979 season May 22 at 7:30 p.m. and will be conti- nued every Tuesday and Thursday evening until Oct. 5, weather permitting. New members are welcome. The regular seniors' day at. the Woodbine races will 'take place 'the following week with the Province's events. The're arè many activities at the centre at the corner of Brock and Pitt Streets. The Doctor Hobbs Trophy Snooker Tournament was successfully played with 12 people taking part. Final players were Roy Hutton and Tom Gresham, with Mr. Gresham winning the tour- nament.. His'name will in- scribed upon the cup. Lew Sherlock, the centre's billiard instructor, has been a billiard and snooker player for more than 55 years. While living in Wales, he played against the cham- pions. He also played for outstanding clubs in North London. He has played for 22 years in Canada and is thoroughly- faniiliar with the International rules of both games. The centre's square danc- ing group was formed ini January 1978. Chuck and Gladys Cooper are the teachers, coming fromn Oshawa every Wednesday afternoon to work with the class. They are volunteers and have been happy work- ing with the members of the centre. Çbu.ck. calîs the "squares" and as many as 20 people have been at.the sessions. Gladys bas been square dan- cing for more than 50,years. At the regular dances at the centre, at least two sets are danced, which are called by Chuck. At the February dance thére were three squares with 24 dancers up at one time. Mrs. Ivy Latrobeconducts a regular Bible study class at the centre. The Jubilee Choir formed more than two years ago, has entertained 13 apprecia- tive audiences. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Whitby for the past 15 years. She bas had professional study in piano and singing and is throughly qualified to conduct children's, men's and mixed choruses. The choir meets at 10:30 a.m. every Wednesday.-' Lyn Knight is the leader of the choir and bas served very capably in this position. In April the choir per- formed at Fairview Lodge, Sunnycrest Nursing Home, Hillsdale Manor and the Knights of Columbus Hall for the Seniors Co-operating Club. At this time it is planned that there should be swim- ming every Monday in May with the exception of May 21. The fitness group meets Tuesdays at il a.m. and Wednesdays at 1 p.m. Pauline Luff, who is the leader of these two groups is j a volunteer at the centre. She is a physical instructor for County Tom4 the YWCA. There are 16 members in the fitness groujp and about the same number in the swimming class. At the present timne the centre has 400 paid-up members for 1979. In addi- tion there were more than 100 who were members in 1977 and 1978 who have not renewed their. membership to date. In addition to the activity centre there are also five senior citizens clubs within the Town of Whitby, with a total of approximately- 300 members. The centre has recently been given a very attractive trophy by the Knights of Columbus to be presented to the winner of a dart tourna- ment to be held at the centre at a later date. Craft classes are held' every Monday at 1:30'*p.m. under the direction of Irene Gow who has been interested in crafts for more than 30 years. Singers' annual spring concert set for May 15 and 16 Whitby's County Town Singers are busy practicing twice a week for their l2th annual spring concert, to be held May 15 and 16 at 8: 15 p.m. at Anderson Collegiate. The theme of this year's concert is "That's Entertain- ment." Some of the featured songs will be Over the Rainbow, This Land is Vour Land, Broadway Spectacu- lar,' Brigadoon, Am azing Grace,, Godspell, Canadian Railroad Trilogy, Streets of London, and Mr. Bojangles. A special feature of the concert will be a medley of Bing Crosby songs, arranged by County Town Singers Director James Ashley. Mr. Ashley, as usual, will be directing the choir, and Marg Webber will be at the piano. Assistant Director is Norm Kitney and Assistant Pianist is Diana Mackie. A selection of bright cos- tumes bas been prepared to highlight the entertainment theme.
