Judge Donald Dodds remanded Mrs. Williams to May. 25. for sentencing. She pleaded not guilty and defended herseif in a three- hour trial. On the witness stand, Mrs. Williams admitted to having been convicted for similar charges regarding dogs and ca ts. Inspector John Kirkland of the Ontario Humane Society, testified that he and a Water- loo Veterinarian checked out the animais on her farm with a search warrent last Oct. 4. They found eight cats','12 dogs and nine ponies in good health, said Inspector Kirk- land, but also found a 20-year old palomino mare tied out- side to a barn in a paddock. There was no water or feed available and the mare showed signs of weakness and staggered, Inspector Kirkland told the court. He said the mare had a 30-foot rope tanghed around her right leg which hampered her movement. Veterinarian Dr. A.E. Stockman said the horse was emaciated, thin, several hundred pounds under- weight, anemic and, stag- gering due to starvation. Mrs. Williams said the horse had disappeared .on. Sept. 13 and returned on .Sept. 16, and a veterinarian could not discover why it had begun to lose weight.' She said she had been feeding the mare, and had taken it to the Oshawa creek on her property shortly before Inspector Kirkland arrived with the search warrant. She told the court she had been "harrassed since 1962" by the Ontario }lumané Society.
