Mr. Stewart described 1978 as a "moderate financial success." An extensive public rela- tions campaign of trade shows, mall displays, speak- ing engagements, workshops, seminars, con- ferences, slide presenta- tions, open houses, family nights, and a family portait program were carried out, Mr. Elliott reported. Mr. Elliott reported that the total number of persons "touched by the Y" in 1978 was 20,508; made up of 2,200 in pre-school services, 1,181 in youth services, 2,213 in adult services, 2,511 boys and girls served, and 1,234 young adults served. m basis of their specific skills and not simply on their willingness to serve. Another project of the planning and development committee has been to determine the potential and possibility for a permanent YMCA office building and facilities, and various attempts were initiated to research and identify possible site locations in Whitby and other parts of the region. No final position has been taken yet, and the matter is still under study. Donna Harris of the pro- gram committee reported continued growth in number of progiram locations and users, and also in their content. "There was continued solid growth and develop- ment in the outlying areas of Port Perry, Uxbridge and Oshawa in 1978," she said. "On-going services to the Whitby-Brooklin area pro- vided area residents with a wider range of courses to choose from and improved program content through many in-staff training sessions." As a result of the 1978- program year a new pro- gram division has been formed for 1979. Dance is not only made up of Disco but also children's classes and the increasingly popular social dances. Canada Works grants have provided the YMCA with an opportunity for action research, whereby new programs are developed and tested to their suitability in the Durham Region. During the summer a very successful model for work- ing with children in play- grounds was established, said Miss Harris. Camp Francais, a French immer- sion day camp was estab- lished. A canoe camp com- posed of a day program in Whitby and a 'canoe trip in northern Ontario was also set up. 1 Also, through grants, 350 boys and girls were tutored in core corriculum subjects in the Oshawa-Whitby area. The fitness grant tested the physical fitness of 9,253 boys and girls in elementary schools through the Region of Durham as well as intro- ducing the Y to the role of supplying employee fitness packages. An afternoon playschool was established in Sanford and Port Perry as part of the Y program. Steve Elliott, chairman of the membership and public relations committee re- ported that there was an increase in membership fees in 1978, and the introduction of a sustaining membership category to allow individuals groups and organizations the opportunity to support the Y through the securing of a Youth Bond.
