WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MAY 16, 1979, PAGE 15 ELECTION REPORT: Geoff Rison, New Democratic Party Students of voting age were able to hear and ques- tion the candidates in the forthcoming election during the all candidate mééfirigî held at the Anderson Colle: giate and Vocational Insti- tute and Henry Street High School last week. Geoff Rison, New Demo- cratic Pary candidate for Ontario Riding told the stu- dents he is concerned about them and their "future of entering the job market." He claimed that the economy of the country "is in a mess" due in part to the exporting of money from Canada to other countries. "Tremendous amounts of money have left and are leaving the country through the payment of dividends and interest and profits of the multi-nationals. The money is going to these multi-national companies located in New York and London. They are using our wealth as so much of our wealth is being exported by dividends and interest to other countries." Mr. Rison in his speech at Anderson Collegiate said, "at the same time the ownership of our resources has reached the proportion where we now find that our forest industry is 99 per cent owned by overseas interests, the mining industry is owned 96 per cent and 100 per cent of the oil industry is owned by foreign interests. This means that countries outside of Canada are using our wealth for their benefit and we are not sharing in this vast wealth that we have, in their way- The only salvation is to develop our own industry. We are not opposed to profits we are opposed to money going out of the country. For example Inco is using money to develop resources and industry in Guatamala. Let us have some of that money in our country so you can have a job." Replying to the question in regards to the increasing cost of university education, Mr. Rison said as "to the increasing cost of university it is the result of the con- servative Government. It is not giving away anything that is yours." Women's Institute elected Canada. As soon as you export our money-you export jobs. By shipping our raw materials you are shipping jobs also. ,Let us use the wealth of Canada first for Canada." At Henry Street High School Mr. Rison asked the students to consider the political commercials. Take for instance the Liberal Commercials, he- said. "They are promoting a man. The Policy of the Liberals is Trudeau; they have no policies. The reason they have no policies is that they have only one man and he has been running the party. In the past 10 years he has lost 150 Cabinet Ministers. Why have they left? The reason is that Trudeau is the boss." Turning to the Progressive Conservative Party commercials Mr. Rison said these "present the party, and they will unite Canada. How can the party unite the country when there is a crack in the campaign? They have stated a policy on law that is one law for the police and one law, for you. The N.D:P. say there should just be one law in the country. That is one law for you and the same law for the police." Continuing on finding flaws in the Progressive Conservative Party, Mr. Rison said, "Mr. Fennell is against his leader on the capital punishment question. There is another crack in the party. They can't hold-their party together." Mr. Rison concluded his eight-minute allotted speech time by saying, "there is a basic issue and that is, let us make the wealth of Canada work for you and your children. Make the wealth of Canada work for every-one in the country." During the question period Mr. Rison was asked by the students, "how can the NDP help me to get a job? His reply was, encourage small business. "The present slow-down in small businesses is due to high interest rates. No small business can function under the present high interest rates. The NDP would legislate a reduction in interest rates in order to get investment funds into the country. This is the way the NDP can help you and the youth of this country get a job." By keeping the resources here in the country and producing a finished product is another way the NDP can help provide jobs for the young people and for the future, he said. When asked, "if we don't help other countries by shar- ing our wealth and if we need help who is going to give it to us," Mr. Risonreplied, "it is not the 'country and the consumer; it is-between the large sector multi-national corporations." Replying to the question "where are the NDP goingto get the money", he said from the large Corporations. "The people are being taxed too highly because the Corporations aren't paying' Lincoln Gregor. You lose your vote only if you vote for some- thing you don't believe in. If an ordinary person does flot believe the Liberals or Cônservatives represent his or her interests or the family's interests, then a vote for either of them is a wasted vote. On the other hand -, a vote for the NDP- even though we're not the officialopposition - is a vote for influence in Ottawa. In this province, we know what a Tory govern- ment would do to stimulate the economy. They'd give Big Business tax giveaways to mechanize -'thereby putting more Canad- ians out of work. We've seen it; provincial- ly, for decades. It does not work. We don't need to try it federally, when we know it doesn't work. The old ways of thinking -and voting have been tried, and found inadequate. .We need a change. j Uxbridge 852-7292 I Ajax 686-2211 Mrs. Walter Campbell was elected president of the Whitby Women's Institute at the annual meeting, held recently at the home of Mrs. Lincoln Gregor.
