Youths nabbed by police Alert police officers while on patrol in Whitby noticed some suspicious actions around a parked van on one of the town streets last week. As Constables Murphy and Moore investigated the- unusual goings on, they caught two youths in the process of attempting to steal stereo tapes from the parked van, police said. Apprehended by the two officers -are« Raymond Williamson 18 of 175 Tulloch Drive and Patrick Delany 17 of 47 Dryer Drive, Ajax. The youths were apprehended about 1 a.m. May 16 police said. The tie vote was then broken by Mayor Gartshore who is in favor of Walnut Street being widened to 32 feet, thus the Council passed the resolution that Walnut Street be reconstructed and widened to a 32 foot width. As the "disappointed" and disgruntled residents of Walnut Street left the Council Chambers such remarks as "it is ail cut and dried" and "when is the date of the next election," could be heard. Another voice said, "Council is overlooking the regards of the people in the neighborhood to service the newer urban developers in the area." As he made his presenta- tion to the Council opposing the widening of Walnut Street Gary Berry, 'spokes- man for the 'anti-widening group said, "we recognize that improvements have to be made in an established residential area and that should be taken into conside- ration" in place of trying to consider the people of the newly developed subdivision in the area. "In the established parts of the old Town of Whitby people can go down the side streets to the main roads such as Brock and Cochrane 3treets. In the subdivisions it is like a community within a community," Mr. Berry pointed out. He showed Council the lifference by using two maps, one wih the network of sidestreets that forms the old established areas of the Town and the other with the subdivision plan which has only one entrance into the subdivision and . this main street or road circles throughthe subdivision back out onto the main thorough- fares through the entrance. In other words there is just one outlet and inlet to the subdivisions and if the Town has Walnut Street widened "it' is going to become a straightthoroughfare right TAKE NOTICE THAT a Public Meeting of The Liquor Licence Board of Ontario will be held at THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION HALL, 217 MURRAY STREET, PETERBOROUGH, ONTARIO, on THURSDAY, JUNE 14th, 1979, at the hour of 10:00 o'clock in the forenoon, at which time the Board will hear applications for new li- cences in accordance with The Liquor Licence Act, 1975 and Regulations thereunder. During the discussion it was learned that the Kins- men Club who donated Kins- men Park to the Town was not aware of the fact that plans are underway for the widening of Walnut Street. The home owners in the area are concerned for the safety of the children who use Kinsmen Park which abuts- directly onto Walnut Street. "Council has spent a lot of money on the groundwork for this project, I think now we should go forth with the street instead of letting Council spend all that money for nothing." Councillor Carson pointed out during the debate that, "you're not going to dis- courage cars on that street. No matter what you do, people will go down Walnut Street.
