PAGE 10, 1979, WEDNESDAY,.JUNE 6,1979, WHITBY FREE PRESS Blood donor clinic is. on June 13 Whitby Red Cross is hold- ing a blood donor clinic, Wednesday, June 13, from 2 P.m . to8 p.m . It will be at the Legion Hall, Byron Street South. Whitby's objective for that day, as laid down by the Blood Recruitment head- quarters in Toronto, is 363 donors. Since March 1974, when the present blood donor chairman, .Joyce Cox, took over, there have been eight- een clinies in Whitby, with an overali average of, 3M6dona- tions. For many reasons, such as donors moving away or being iii on clinic day, at least one hundred new donors must corne foward at each clinic to keep up Whitby's excellent record. To be a blood donor, you must be over eighteen and under - sixty six. Both girls and boys of seventeen may give blood, if their parents sign a note of permission. One is allowed to give blood every three. months, flot more often than every ninety -one days. Whithy's clinics are spaced at least ninety- one'days apart. A prospective blood donor must weigh at.Ieast 100 lbs. The average person has ap- proximatelyîo .to 12 pints of blood flowing through his body at most times. There- fore, taking one unit (slightly less than 1, pint) of blood from -him does not affect him adversely. However, taking one unit from a smaller person, who lias a lesser amount of total blood volume could affect one's circulation and rèduce the hemoglobin level below acceptable limits People who have had hepa- titis, or are suffering fromn certain chronic diseases, are permanently prevented fromn donating blood, sometimes because of danger to'them- selves or elce to the recipient of their donation. Short termn deferrals are made if donors have temp- orary health problems or are on medication. The nurse in charge has the final say on clinic day.
