Many thefts reported The home of Joseph Gran- der, 122 Bowman Avenue was broken into while the owner was away. Police said that entry was made by someone forcing the front door open. Although the house had been broken into in the owner's absence police said that "nothirg appeared to be missing." "Break, enter and thefts seem to be getting pretty consistant," Inspector David Fleming said. "There are a lot of thefts of bicycles." Police said that Garry Richard Annis of 520 Euclid Street, reported a theft of goods valued at more than $200 from his car. Stolen from the auto parked at the owner's residence was a cas- sette player and cassette tapes. A roto tiller was taken from the driveway of Eric Branton, Third Concession, R. R. 2 Whitby, Mr. Branton had left the roto tiller in his driveway and on his return to where he had left the roto tiller it was gone, police said. Police also reported that a fire in the back room of the Laundramat in Blair Park Plaza, did extensive damage. The fire which gutted the back room of the laundramat is "of unknown origin," police said. $300 fine for firing a gun A 20-year old Whitby resident was fined $300 or 10 days in jail last week for discharging a firearm with- out reasonable . precautions for theý safety of other persons. Dean Hoffman, of 201 White Oaks Court pleaded guilty to the charge. The court was told that Hoffman, a resident of the eighth floor of the apartment was bothered by * pigeons roosting on his balcony and tried to dispatch them with a .22 calibre pellet pistol he had obtained from a friend. The court was told he was drinking on May 18 and at 3:20 a.m. fired a couple of shots at a garbage bin half a block away. A man walking his dog around the apartment buildings heard the shots, yelled, and shone his flash- light at Hoffman. The court was told that when police arrived at Hof- fman's apartment they had a hard time awakening him because of his intoxication. Judge Donald Dodds placed Hoffman on probation for 12 months and banned him from having a firearm in his possession during that time. Hoffman admitted to the judge that he was regretful over the "partly drunken prank."
