PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13, 1979, PAGE 5 accepted by the Canadian Fire Chiefs' Association. In this day and age most departments have an arson specialist. Thrill seekers or sometimes people with a certain problem set fires and either stay or return quickly to the scene of their crime where they are picked up by the arson squad cameras and apprehended. People who commit arson for gain do not remain to watch but are generally caught at a later time. Newcomers to Whitby sometimes ask about symbol stickers for windows to indicate a child's room, handicapped or the bedroom of'ai invalid. There are advantages and disadvan- tages. These stickers may give a false sense of security, I think because the person whose room is marked might not be in that part of the house and many precious minutes could be lost due to the firemen gaining entry at these sites. So often small children climb out of bed during the night and snuggle down in bed with their parents or a sibling. All the pros and cons have been discussed and as of now the decision is, no stickers in Whitby. A wise conclusion. Smoke detectors are mass-produced now and relatively cheap. These are the life savers! If your doctor suggested that you buy medicine to cure an ailment or to save your life you probably would "vithout question. Mà ybe the same reasoning applies to the smoke detectors. It too could prevent "ailments" and save your life. Our fire fighters inspect homes, public buildings and factories. Lectures are given to school children, Guides and Scouts who are given badges. There is a training program during the summer on fire safety for il to 13 years old. I wonder if anyone during this training period is allowed to slide down the pole? Open House is held generally in October for the general public for a week this is time well spent for young and old alike to visit and become aquainted with our Fire Fighters. Apart from our main station on Brock Street South, we have No. 2 station just off Thickson Road not far from Highway 2. This station operates as efficiently and well but without some rescue equipment which is supplemented by No. 1 station. Also there is a station in Brooklin and one in Myrtle which are manned by part time members. ' Many thanks to Deputy Chief Van Doleweerd and Captain Ken Corner for their kindness in helping me to give you some facts. One hundred and twenty seven years ago our 'Fire Department which consisted of volunteer fire fighters and a horse-drWn e 'eamer came into being. What a contrast! To-day we have the latest and best equipment manned by a - well-trained and dedicated group of men. We have lost that wonderous, heart thumping pounding of hooves and the thundering sounds of the steamer with bells clanging being pulled over the cobblestone streets! Maybe to-day the youngsters respond in a similiar way to the speeding fire strucks with their sirens screaming as they drive along our ashphalt roads. We have a spanking clean fire station with intelligent, well groomed fire fighters ready at a moment's notice for any emergency To see the equipment and to have a knowledgable staff member explain its function gives one a great sense of security and well being. Everything under certain circumstances could be lost, but through no fault of our Rire Department. Rescue unit No. 33 carries auxillary equipment such as ventilators, splints and saws which cut through concrete and steel. This unit supplements the two pumpers when rescues and disastérs are involved and is used as a back-up unit for other types of emergencies such as drownings and carries dragging equipment, ropes etc. Clean-up supplies such as vacuums are carried to bring things back to their original condition, to the state prior to the fire. The aerial ladder truck has the advantage of height; in this case around seven storeys but this depends of course on how close to the site the truck can be parked. High rise fires are fought from within. Building codes demand concrete, steel and fire doors and this confines the fire to a small area as a rule. For rural areas a water tanker was purchased in 1975 which can contain 1,500 gallons of water. When there is personal injury the local ambulance people are notified. The Fire Department carries equipment for heart, breathing or stroke victims; resuscitators and so on and both ambulance and fire departments work to-gether. The police too are part of the team. There is a central computer which notifies all branches in a split second and traffic lights are also controlled in this manner within a certain area of the down town core. There have been many studies made to determine which colour is most easily seen day or night and yellow came out on top as the most conspicuous and visible. Red almost finished last especially at night. Yellow it is, and this colour has been THIS WEEKS SPECIAL MANDERS RATTAN 305 BROCK ST. N.
